Diskless 2-bay ARM NAS with soldered 1GB and one 2.5GbE port

AS1202T; 1GB DDR4; diskless; 2 SATA bays

Buy the AS1202T if you want a compact 2-bay 2.5GbE backup box and can live with 1GB of soldered RAM and 3.5-inch HDDs only. TechPowerUp's RAID 1 IronWolf copies sit in the 106–156 MB/s band for the game library and single large file on 2.5GbE; they are not 2.5GbE line-rate, and large photo sets are much slower. Skip it if you need RAM headroom, 2.5-inch/NVMe support, or quiet-at-the-ear measurements with a stated distance. See the review evidence ↓

ASUSTOR AS1202T network attached storage system

Who this configuration fits

File sharing and backup

2 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. A two-drive mirror stores one drive’s worth of data before overhead; there is no SATA RAID 5/6 path. AS12 lists only 3.5-inch SATA HDDs; do not assume 2.5-inch SSD support.[1]

Good fit

Application hosting beyond file and backup services

The 1GB DDR4 memory is fixed; choose its file and backup features before planning application hosting.[1]

Limited fit

Fast wired transfers

1 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (2.5G/1G/100M); confirm the rest of the network and drive layout.[1]

Storage, network and software trade-offs

01

Match the storage layout to the job

2 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. A two-drive mirror stores one drive’s worth of data before overhead; there is no SATA RAID 5/6 path. AS12 lists only 3.5-inch SATA HDDs; do not assume 2.5-inch SSD support.[1]

02

Plan the complete network path

1 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (2.5G/1G/100M). A port rate is a link rating; protocol overhead, client storage and the array reduce file-transfer rates. This model has one Ethernet port.[1]

03

What the RAID 1 copies actually measured

On RAID 1 with two 4TB IronWolf HDDs over the NAS 2.5GbE port, TechPowerUp CDM 9.0.1 (5×1 GiB) SEQ1M Q8T1 read 199.58 / write 178.86 MB/s. AJA 64GB 4K10-bit YUV 171/167 MB/s to/from NAS. Game library 96.2GB 106.5/120.4 MB/s; 66.9GB file 155.7/149.6 MB/s; 4084 photos 66.2/47.4 MB/s.[5]

04

What independent tests actually measured

A diskless 2-bay, 1GB soldered DDR4, single 2.5GbE ARM NAS for file sharing and backup. On RAID 1 with two 4TB IronWolf HDDs, TechPowerUp measured about 200/179 MB/s CDM sequential and 106–156 MB/s real copies over 2.5GbE; photo sets drop to 47–66 MB/s. Auto-fan noise stayed ~37–38 dBA; 51.2 dBA is the forced-high-fan peak, not daily use. Official disks are 3.5-inch SATA HDD only.[5]

05

Heat and fan behavior in the test

With two 4TB IronWolf HDDs and the fan around 900 rpm, reported CPU temperature stayed around 36°C; drives were 29–30°C idle and approached 35°C during more intense tests. Ambient temperature was not stated, so these are observed sensor readings rather than temperature rise above ambient.[5]

Questions before buying AS1202T

Does AS1202T include storage?

No. This page covers the factory-memory diskless enclosure with 2 SATA bays. Check the exact configuration in each seller listing.[3]

Can I expand the memory?

No. The 1GB DDR4 is soldered and cannot be expanded.[1]

How fast should file copies be?

On RAID 1 with two 4TB IronWolf HDDs, TechPowerUp recorded CDM SEQ1M Q8T1 199.58/178.86 MB/s and a 66.9GB file copy 155.7 MB/s to the NAS over 2.5GbE. Photo-set copies were 66.2/47.4 MB/s. Those are this lab's figures, not a guarantee.[5]

Are snapshots enough for backup?

No. Btrfs snapshots help recover earlier file states on the NAS; keep another copy on separate storage and test restoration.[1]
