Diskless 4-bay ARM NAS with soldered 1GB and one 2.5GbE port

AS1204T; 1GB DDR4; diskless; 4 SATA bays

The AS1204T is the 4-bay sibling of the 1GB 2.5GbE ARM Drivestor: useful if you want RAID 5/6 in a cheap chassis and can accept soldered 1GB. TostieTech's 210 MB/s RAID 0 write used four disks and a >100GB file. PauseHardware's slower RAID 1 writes were on two unhealthy 4TB drives — do not treat that as the healthy minimum. See the review evidence ↓

ASUSTOR AS1204T network attached storage system

Who this configuration fits

File sharing and backup

4 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. RAID 5/6 can trade usable capacity for one/two-drive failure tolerance when enough drives are installed. AS12 lists only 3.5-inch SATA HDDs; do not assume 2.5-inch SSD support.[1]

Good fit

Application hosting beyond file and backup services

The 1GB DDR4 memory is fixed; choose its file and backup features before planning application hosting.[1]

Limited fit

Fast wired transfers

1 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (2.5G/1G/100M); confirm the rest of the network and drive layout.[1]

Storage, network and software trade-offs

01

Match the storage layout to the job

4 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. RAID 5/6 can trade usable capacity for one/two-drive failure tolerance when enough drives are installed. AS12 lists only 3.5-inch SATA HDDs; do not assume 2.5-inch SSD support.[1]

02

Plan the complete network path

1 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (2.5G/1G/100M). A port rate is a link rating; protocol overhead, client storage and the array reduce file-transfer rates. This model has one Ethernet port.[1]

03

Understand software and workload limits

Large sequential writes were faster in RAID 0 than JBOD. The author also restored a deleted folder with Snapshot Center.[5]

04

What independent tests actually measured

Diskless 4-bay ARM NAS with soldered 1GB and one 2.5GbE port. TostieTech's 4-disk RAID 0 large-file write was 210 MB/s; PauseHardware's 2-disk RAID 1 NPT was 166/292 MB/s write/read on unhealthy 4TB IronWolf drives. RAID 5 needs at least three drives; RAID 6 needs four. Use healthy drives and keep a separate backup.[5][6]

05

Power and noise depend on installed drives

TostieTech observed12 W idle and about25 W under full CPU load with four HDDs. PauseHardware reported10.2 W at rest and23.5 W full load with two HDDs, plus about25 dBA normally and34 dBA during large-file I/O. Different disks and test conditions prevent a direct efficiency or noise comparison; acoustic distance and room floor were not stated.[5][6]

06

Plex works best with compatible playback devices

TostieTech reports smooth local Full HD/4K Direct Play and weaker heavy4K transcoding. Codec, bitrate and client details are missing, so this is qualitative experience rather than a transcode-stream guarantee.[5]

AS1204T — TostieTech original review

Updated Sep 6, 2026

Tested: Four HDDs; RAID 0 and JBOD; 2.5GbE; file larger than 100GB. Drive models and client details are not disclosed.

Applies to: Exact enclosure model; conclusions apply to the stated tested storage and network setup.

  • Large sequential writes were faster in RAID 0 than JBOD. The author also restored a deleted folder with Snapshot Center.Source location: Testing / performance / setup section
  • The author reports working local Full HD/4K Direct Play and slower heavy 4K transcoding, but does not disclose codecs, bitrates or client models. Snapshot Center restored deleted and overwritten test files; one IP camera and local Wake-on-LAN were also tried.Source location: Snapshot center; Surveillance Center; Wake-on-LAN; Transcoderen met Plex

Limits to keep in mind

  • Transfer figures are not redundant-array or multi-user benchmarks.
  • One review sample is not long-term failure-rate evidence.
  • The article mentions 43 dB and two measuring distances, but the chart was blocked during this review; distances, weighting and background noise remain unverified.
  • Its 2.5-inch SSD support statement conflicts with the official AS12 specification; official supported drive type is 3.5-inch SATA HDD.
  • Plex observations do not establish hardware-transcoding support or a measured concurrent-stream limit.

PauseHardware: AS1204T RAID 1 with two 4TB IronWolf drives

NAS Performance Tester averaged 166.34 MB/s write and 292 MB/s read on RAID 1 with two 4TB IronWolf drives; a 6.50GB copy ran about 160 MB/s. Disk 2 had SMART bad / IronWolf warning. The author notes the write gap versus Asustor's 294 MB/s claim may relate to those warnings. That does not establish a healthy-unit minimum.

PauseHardware: AS1204T RAID 1 with two 4TB IronWolf drives

Updated Mar 20, 2026

Tested: AS1204T, two 4TB IronWolf HDDs in RAID 1 (not four bays populated). Disk 2 SMART bad / IronWolf warning. Client: Ryzen 5 3600 PC, Kingston A2000 SSD, Asustor ASW205T 2.5GbE switch, Windows 11. Author notes Asustor sample relationship.

Applies to: Exact AS1204T but only two of four bays filled and the IronWolf pair had SMART/health warnings. This is an observation on that sample, not a proven lower bound for a healthy four-bay unit.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Only two bays populated
  • Unhealthy sample disks — not a healthy-unit lower bound
  • Ongoing vendor relationship stated; sample loan of this chassis not explicit
  • Original CDM Q1T1 read screenshot is164.69 MB/s; article text says164.76. Screenshot adopted and discrepancy retained.
  • Temperature graphic shows CPU35/25°C and HDD31/24°C in hot/cold columns without explicit state labels or ambient temperature; no load/idle assignment inferred.
  • Article RAID50/60 claim is not adopted: official AS1204T table lists Single/JBOD/RAID0/1/5/6/10.

Questions before buying AS1204T

Does AS1204T include storage?

No. This page covers the factory-memory diskless enclosure with 4 SATA bays. Check the exact configuration in each seller listing.[3]

Can I expand the memory?

No. The 1GB DDR4 is soldered and cannot be expanded.[1]

How fast should file copies be?

TostieTech: RAID 0 large-file write 210 MB/s (>100GB file, four HDDs, 2.5GbE). PauseHardware: RAID 1 NPT 166.34/292 MB/s write/read on two 4TB IronWolf drives with SMART warnings — not a healthy-unit floor.[5][6]

Are snapshots enough for backup?

No. Btrfs snapshots help recover earlier file states on the NAS; keep another copy on separate storage and test restoration.[1]
