Diskless 2-bay N5105 NAS with 4GB (max 16GB), four M.2 slots and dual 2.5GbE

AS5402T; 4GB (1 x 4GB); diskless; 2 SATA bays

The AS5402T is the 2-bay N5105 box to buy when you will use dual 2.5GbE, M.2 and a RAM upgrade. A single 2.5GbE port already hit 295 MB/s reads from SSD/NVMe in Tech Advisor's 2023 test; bonding is a separate two-client story. HDD traffic stays drive-limited. 4GB is tight for lots of apps. Who this configuration fits

File sharing and backup

2 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. A two-drive mirror stores one drive’s worth of data before overhead; there is no SATA RAID 5/6 path. Use the model compatibility list before buying drives.[1]

Good fit

Fast clients and SSD workloads

Fast network ports and SSD slots add value only when the client, switch and workload can use them.[1]

Check the limits

Fast wired transfers

2 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (2.5G/1G/100M); confirm the rest of the network and drive layout.[1]

Storage, network and software trade-offs

01

Match the storage layout to the job

2 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. A two-drive mirror stores one drive’s worth of data before overhead; there is no SATA RAID 5/6 path. Use the model compatibility list before buying drives.[1]

02

Plan the complete network path

2 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (2.5G/1G/100M). A port rate is a link rating; protocol overhead, client storage and the array reduce file-transfer rates. Combining ports requires suitable network/client configuration.[1]

03

Understand software and workload limits

The author reports consistent HDD-limited transfers and successful Plex hardware transcoding during personal use.[4]

04

What independent tests actually measured

Android Central used two6TB IronWolf drives and reported good Plex use without quantified codec tests. Tech Advisor measured single-port NVMe transfers of295/280 MB/s; its cached HDD reached227/160 MB/s on2.5GbE. LinuxLinks measured36.8W during an HDD copy and15.4W with disks hibernating on a different four-drive configuration.[4][5][6]

AS5402T — Android Central original review

Tested: Two 6TB IronWolf HDDs; Windows client SSD; 2.5GbE; approximately three months of use. RAID is not disclosed.

Applies to: Exact enclosure model; conclusions apply to the stated tested storage and network setup.

  • The author reports consistent HDD-limited transfers and successful Plex hardware transcoding during personal use.Source location: Testing / performance / setup section

Limits to keep in mind

  • No numerical transfer results, codec profile or simultaneous stream count are supplied; this is qualitative evidence.
  • One review sample is not long-term failure-rate evidence.

Tech Advisor: AS5402T 2.5GbE vs SSD path

Over a single 2.5GbE LAN port, switching the source to a SATA SSD achieved 295 MB/s read and 165 MB/s write. NVMe-only layout reached 295 MB/s read and 280 MB/s write on that same single port. Mechanical drives are described around 150 MB/s each. Two ports can be bonded so two clients each see about 290 MB/s — that is not the 295 figure. SMB Multichannel was not tested.

Tech Advisor: AS5402T 2.5GbE vs SSD path

Tested: AS5402T stock 4GB. Author used a 1.5TB WD Green HDD and two Crucial P3 M.2 NVMe drives for caching, connected via an Asustor 2.5GbE path. SMB Multichannel was not configured in the test environment. Network switch: ASUSTOR ASW205T.

Applies to: Exact 4GB SKU. The 295 MB/s read is a SINGLE LAN port result (SATA SSD source over 2.5GbE, and again on NVMe). Channel bonding is discussed separately as two clients around 290 MB/s each and is not this measurement.

Questions before buying AS5402T

Does AS5402T include storage?

No. This page covers the factory-memory diskless enclosure with 2 SATA bays. Check the exact configuration in each seller listing.[2]

Can I expand the memory?

16GB (2 x 8GB) Support mixed capacity. Follow the supported module configuration; third-party RAM compatibility is not guaranteed by a matching capacity alone.[1]

How fast should file copies be?

Tech Advisor (19 Sep 2023): 295 MB/s read / 165 MB/s write from a SATA SSD over ONE 2.5GbE port; NVMe-only 295/280 MB/s on that same single port. Bonded two-client ~290 MB/s each is a different, unmeasured-here claim. HDDs ~150 MB/s each.[5]

Are snapshots enough for backup?

No. Btrfs snapshots help recover earlier file states on the NAS; keep another copy on separate storage and test restoration.[1]
