Diskless 2-bay N5105 NAS with dual 5GbE, four M.2, 4GB/16GB

AS6702T v2; 4GB (1 x 4GB); diskless; 2 SATA bays

Buy the AS6702T v2 if you want four M.2 slots and dual 5GbE on a 2-bay N5105 box, and you will actually use SSD or many small sequential CDM-style transfers. For ordinary HDD RAID 1 copies, TechPowerUp's IronWolf tests stayed about 138–177 MB/s whether one or two 5GbE ports were up. The 1200 MB/s CDM read is a 1 GiB cached synthetic, not 4TB 5400 RPM throughput. See the review evidence ↓

Who this configuration fits

File sharing and backup

2 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. A two-drive mirror stores one drive’s worth of data before overhead; there is no SATA RAID 5/6 path. Use the model compatibility list before buying drives.[1]

Good fit

Fast clients and SSD workloads

Fast network ports and SSD slots add value only when the client, switch and workload can use them.[1]

Check the limits

Fast wired transfers

2 x 5 Gigabit Ethernet (5G/2.5G/1G/100M); confirm the rest of the network and drive layout.[1]

Storage, network and software trade-offs

01

Match the storage layout to the job

2 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. A two-drive mirror stores one drive’s worth of data before overhead; there is no SATA RAID 5/6 path. Use the model compatibility list before buying drives.[1]

02

Plan the complete network path

2 x 5 Gigabit Ethernet (5G/2.5G/1G/100M). A port rate is a link rating; protocol overhead, client storage and the array reduce file-transfer rates. Combining ports requires suitable network/client configuration.[1]

03

Understand software and workload limits

The combined-network test demonstrates throughput beyond a single 5GbE connection under the article setup.[6]

04

Dual 5GbE vs real HDD copies

RAID 1 CrystalDiskMark 9.0.1 (5 runs, 1 GiB): single 5GbE SEQ1M Q8T1 read 619.37 / write 230.07 MB/s; dual 5GbE 1206.80 / 258.78 MB/s. Sequential read roughly doubles with two ports; write barely moves (230.07 vs 258.78). Those 1 GiB sequential reads are above the IronWolf 202 MB/s platter rating, so they are not sustained HDD throughput. HDD-only Explorer copies barely change from one 5GbE port to two: game library 96.2GB 152.3/138.7 vs 152/138 MB/s to/from NAS; 66.9GB file 165.1/177 vs 176.6/171.7; photos 10.6GB 150.8/51 vs 150.8/49.6. SSD-cache bars on the same charts are a different path (game cache from-NAS 284.7 vs 305.9) and are not HDD platter results. Page 8 prose: SMB multichannel showed no apparent real-world copy benefit even to SSD, unlike CDM.[8]

Limits to keep in mind

  • This is not a guaranteed single-client result; aggregation method and other test details are incomplete.
  • One review sample is not long-term failure-rate evidence.
  • Article has conflicting memory-slot wording; official two-slot specification takes precedence. PQC capability is not a measured security guarantee. Gift/loan terms unknown.

Questions before buying AS6702T v2

Does AS6702T v2 include storage?

No. This page covers the factory-memory diskless enclosure with 2 SATA bays. Check the exact configuration in each seller listing.[3]

Can I expand the memory?

16GB (2 x 8GB) Support mixed capacity. Follow the supported module configuration; third-party RAM compatibility is not guaranteed by a matching capacity alone.[1]

How fast should file copies be?

RAID 1, two 4TB IronWolf, ADM 5.1.3.RH72: CDM 1 GiB SEQ1M Q8T1 619.37/230.07 MB/s on one 5GbE and 1206.80/258.78 on two. HDD game copy 152.3/138.7 vs 152/138 MB/s; 66.9GB file 165.1/177 vs 176.6/171.7; photos 150.8/51 vs 150.8/49.6. CDM 1 GiB reads are cache-affected. Datormagazin 843/765 MB/s is SSD RAID 1 with combined ports, not this HDD layout.[8][6]

Are snapshots enough for backup?

No. Btrfs snapshots help recover earlier file states on the NAS; keep another copy on separate storage and test restoration.[1]
