ASUSTOR AS6804T network attached storage system

Who this configuration fits

File sharing and backup

4 SATA bays set the main capacity and redundancy choices. RAID 5/6 can trade usable capacity for one/two-drive failure tolerance when enough drives are installed. Use the model compatibility list before buying drives.[1]

Good fit

Direct display and hardware media transcoding

There is no documented display output or proven codec-specific hardware-transcoding workload.[1]

Limited fit

Fast wired transfers

2 x 5 Gigabit Ethernet (5G/2.5G/1G/100M) 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10G/2.5G/1G/100M); confirm the rest of the network and drive layout.[1]

Storage, network and software trade-offs

01

Hardware that is easy to over-read

The table is Ryzen V3C14, 16GB ECC DDR5 (64GB max; mixing non-ECC disables ECC), four SATA plus four M.2 on PCIe 4.0 x1, two 10GbE and two 5GbE, three USB 3.2 Gen2 and two USB4. USB4 is 40 Gbps per port with host-to-host unsupported. There is no HDMI.[1]

02

What independent tests actually moved

IT-Connect used three IronWolf HDDs in RAID 5 on 10GbE. Chart unencrypted SMB: 2GB 750.61 write / 1071.53 read MB/s; encrypted 2GB write 237.12 / read 1039.28. The article’s sample list (200×1MB, 200×10MB, 5×100MB, 5×1000MB) does not match the chart buckets (1MB / 10MB / 500MB / 2GB) — both are shown, neither is silently edited. iSCSI CDM 1GiB SEQ1M Q8T1 is 1051.56/749.55 MB/s; the IOPS screenshot is the same run, not HDD physical IOPS. PCMag separately copied a 4.9GB mixed folder at 283 MBps both ways with four 10TB IronWolf RAID 5 while the NAS 10GbE port sat on a 2.5GbE switch. Vendor 1675/791 MB/s is not independent.[6][7]

03

Software and USB4 caveats

Snapshots (256), RAID levels and Docker/VM apps are listed; none of that is a tested VM count. USB4 can attach external storage and limited ASUSTOR-to-ASUSTOR links on the current AMD driver — not a generic Thunderbolt DAS assumption.[1]

AS6804T — IT-Connect original review

Tested: AS6804T, 16GB ECC, ADM 5.0, three Seagate IronWolf SATA HDDs in RAID 5, 10GbE. Prose file sets: 200×1MB, 200×10MB, 5×100MB, 5×1000MB. Chart axis labels instead: 2GB large / 500MB medium / 10MB small / 1MB tiny. NVMe read-cache added later (author 10–20% small-file reads). iSCSI CDM 9.0.1 x64 Admin, 5 runs, 1GiB, N0% (0/128GiB).

Applies to: Exact AS6804T enclosure on 10GbE SMB/iSCSI. Chart MB/s are this experiment; CDM 1GiB can be cached — do not treat RND4K IOPS as physical HDD IOPS. File-size labels in prose and charts conflict and both are kept.

  • Unencrypted 10GbE SMB RAID 5 (chart): 2GB 750.61 write / 1071.53 read MB/s; 500MB 842.28 / 1021.01; 10MB 638.32 / 697.99; 1MB 226.75 / 293.39.Source location: Test-ASUSTOR-AS6804T-Benchmark-1.png.webp title ASUSTOR Lockerstor Gen3 RAID5 Liaison 10 Gbit/s
  • Encrypted SMB write penalty is large on big files: 2GB write 750.61 → 237.12 MB/s; 500MB 842.28 → 293.92. Reads stay near 1039 MB/s on 2GB/500MB. 1MB write only 226.75 → 198.85.Source location: Test-ASUSTOR-AS6804T-Benchmark-2.png.webp title … 10 Gbit/s + chiffrement
  • Prose lists 200×1MB, 200×10MB, 5×100MB, 5×1000MB; the bar-chart categories are 2GB / 500MB / 10MB / 1MB. Both wordings are retained; neither is rewritten to match the other.Source location: V. Performances sample list vs Benchmark-1/2 axis labels
  • iSCSI CDM 1GiB: SEQ1M Q8T1 1051.56 / 749.55 MB/s; Q1T1 797.90 / 589.00; RND4K Q32T1 459.39 / 154.75; Q1T1 27.16 / 20.31. • Author later cites ~10–20% small-file read gain with NVMe read cache; cache isolation is not proven. Vendor 1675/791 MB/s dual-10GbE figures remain ASUSTOR lab, not this test. No iGPU / no HDMI transcoding.Source location: E. Mon avis / Remarque / CPU note

Questions before buying AS6804T

Does USB4 turn this into a DAS for my Mac?

Do not assume that. The hardware table says host-to-host is not supported. ADM 5.0 mentions USB4 IP connections only for compatible NAS — that is not generic Thunderbolt DAS.[1][6]

Will I see 10GbE speeds?

IT-Connect’s unencrypted 2GB SMB chart reached 1071.53 MB/s read / 750.61 write on 10GbE RAID 5. PCMag’s 283 MBps used a 2.5GbE switch even though the NAS port was 10GbE. Encryption cut the 2GB write to 237.12 MB/s.[6][7]

Why do the IT-Connect file sizes disagree?

The article lists 5×1000MB and 5×100MB samples; the bar charts are labeled 2GB and 500MB. This page keeps both and does not pick one.[6]

Are the CrystalDiskMark IOPS real HDD IOPS?

No. They are the same 1GiB CDM run shown in IOPS units and can include cache. Use the MB/s screenshot for the iSCSI experiment.[6]

Is there HDMI or Quick Sync?

No display output. V3C14 has no iGPU.[1][6]

Can I add a network card and keep all four M.2 slots?

The official AS68 installation guide requires removing the M.2 card to fit the supported add-in 10GbE card. You trade the four M.2 slots for that card; the two built-in 10GbE ports and two 5GbE ports already work without this change.[1][8]
