Software and backup
Manufacturer values and explicit qualification notes.
| macOS 26 Time Machine | Conflicting official statements[2][10] Buffalo KB6060 (updated October 13, 2025) lists LS700 as compatible with macOS 26 Time Machine, but LS700 manual 35022143-13 (March 2026), p.80, says Time Machine backups are no longer supported starting with macOS Tahoe 26. The documents conflict; obtain firmware-specific confirmation before relying on this backup workflow. |
|---|---|
| Backup utilities | NAS Navigator 2; NovaBACKUP Buffalo Edition; USB backup[1] Check registration and the license terms for the supplied edition; cloud storage accounts and capacity can cost extra. |
| Remote file access | Buffalo WebAccess[1] Remote access depends on your network setup and supported client; local file sharing works on the LAN. |
| Docker, virtual machines and advanced media transcoding | No supported host or transcoding workload established[1] File serving and DLNA availability do not prove Plex hardware transcoding or an expandable app platform. |
| Published firmware in the checked download table | 2.04 (2026-04-21); update through 1.98 first if required[1] Observation of the manufacturer download table; not a claim about the version installed in a shipped unit. |
Ownership
Manufacturer values and explicit qualification notes.
| US limited warranty | 2 years[3] Current Buffalo Americas warranty table; retain proof of purchase and observe region conditions. |
|---|---|
| Data recovery and replacement terms | Data is not covered by the hardware warranty[3] Recovery service availability is not a recovery guarantee; a separate backup remains necessary. |
Additional verified notes
Capacity-page footnotes, LS700 manual limits, related benches and source conflicts.
| Japan LS710D0401/N official sequential result (related SKU) | CrystalDiskMark 5.12 Sequential Q=32 T=2, 2GiB: 234.3 MB/s read, 188.4 MB/s write[7] Buffalo Japan /N Amazon-exclusive listing. Test PC i7-4771, Windows Server 2012 R2, Intel X540-T2, LUA-U3-A2G, BS-MP2012. Not a US LS710D0201/0401 independent lab and not a 1GbE result. |
|---|---|
| Additional published LS710 maxima | Japan LS710D0201/N and LS710D0401/N: 24W[7][4] Retained alongside US web 46 W and US datasheet 36 W. None is typical measured use. |
| NAS Navigator for Windows in the 2026-09-11 download table | 3.1.6 (2026-08-07)[1] Utility version on the 700-series download table; not the firmware inside a sealed retail unit. |
| Japan LS710 sleep timer vs DLNA | User report: DLNA server cannot be turned on while the sleep timer is enabled[8] LS710D0401 Japan unit, January 2023. Confirm on the purchased firmware before relying on overnight sleep plus media serving. |
| External USB filesystem compatibility (LS700 manual p.54) | XFS, ext3 (<16 TB), NTFS, HFS Plus (read-only from the NAS), exFAT, FAT32; NTFS/HFS+/exFAT cannot be formatted in Settings; iOS SMB makes FAT32/exFAT read-only[10] First partition only; one device per port; USB hubs are not supported (also p.11). XFS formatting from Settings needs firmware 1.02 or later. |
| LVM volume creation (LS700 manual p.66) | If LVM is enabled, volumes can be created with maximum size limits; creating a volume erases the specified area[10] Reserved volume names listed in the manual. Not a native Btrfs/ZFS snapshot feature. |
| LinkStation backup modes (LS700 manual pp.70–72) | Full backup 1–400 versions or Unlimited (destination restrictions); overwrite incremental keeps deleted source files; overwrite differential removes them; management backup stores point-in-time versions and sets the destination read-only[10] USB management-backup destinations: ext3, XFS, NTFS — not FAT. Do not equate management backup with native Btrfs/ZFS snapshots. |
| Hot-swap (LS700 manual p.226) | This unit does not support hot-swapping[10] Non-malfunctioning replacement: RAID 1 degrades until rebuild; RAID 0 deletes the array; JBOD deletes that drive. LS710D is 1-bay (RAID N/A); replacing the single disk still requires power-off and is not hot-swap. |
Exact product identity & open questions
- Manufacturer model
- LS710D0401[1]
- US factory configuration
- 4TB total across 1 HDD(s)[1]
- SoHo / B-suffix relationship
- US SoHo SKUs add a B suffix (for example LS220D0402B) and are a different catalog product[1]
- Current included HDD revision: Exact HDD model, recording method, workload rating and firmware supplied in current inventory are not guaranteed in the reviewed US documents.
- Internal volume filesystem still unnamed: The LS700 manual documents USB filesystems, backup modes and LVM erase-on-create, but does not name the internal share filesystem as Btrfs or ZFS. Management backup is not a native snapshot. RAM upgrade remains unspecified.
- LS710 published maximum power conflict: Current web page lists 46 W maximum, while the official PDF table lists 36 W; both are retained and neither is used to estimate typical electricity cost.
- No US independent 2.5GbE lab of current retail LS710D0401: Original CDM 8.0.4 chart on a Japan LS710D0401 1 GbE path is now read (SEQ1M Q8T1 116.80/89.69 MB/s). Buffalo Japan 234.3/188.4 MB/s is LS710D0401/N on 2.5GbE. Firmware, NIC, cache isolation and US bundled HDD remain unknown.
- Video ASR and frames: YouTube extraction failed this round (tCsgfaJBI9M LS210 listing; dPhV43m-reI is an LS720 video). No listening or frame claims.
- macOS 26 Time Machine official conflict: Buffalo KB6060 (updated October 13, 2025) lists LS700 as compatible with macOS 26 Time Machine, but LS700 manual 35022143-13 (March 2026), p.80, says Time Machine backups are no longer supported starting with macOS Tahoe 26. The documents conflict; obtain firmware-specific confirmation before relying on this backup workflow.
