LinkStation 710 4TB: specifications and dated store comparison →

Buffalo LinkStation 710 4TB is a populated 1-bay 2.5GbE appliance for straightforward file sharing. A Japan LS710D0401 user on 1 GbE measured CrystalDiskMark SEQ1M Q8T1 116.80/89.69 MB/s — useful as 1GbE-class sequential, not as 2.5GbE line rate. The single disk still has no internal recovery path; the manual forbids hot-swap and does not provide native Btrfs/ZFS snapshots.

LS710D0401 · 1 bays · 4TB HDDs included · US configuration

This guide covers LS710D0401, the US 4TB package with HDDs included. We compare manufacturer documents and exact merchant listings; ChooseCompute has not tested this NAS. Choose the 4TB package as shared space or a secondary backup destination; its one disk leaves no internal recovery path after drive failure. A Japan LS710D0401 CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 run on 1 GbE reached 116.80/89.69 MB/s SEQ1M Q8T1 — not a 2.5GbE lab result. The LS700 English manual (pp. 54, 66–72, 226) documents USB filesystem limits, backup modes, LVM erase-on-create, and no hot-swap. See the review evidence ↓

Buffalo LinkStation 710 4TB network attached storage system

Is it a good fit?

4TB populated shared storage

One included drive provides the stated raw capacity without an internal mirror; keep a separate backup.[1]

Good fit

A backup destination

Keep a separate copy and verify restore behavior; RAID alone is insufficient.[1]

Check the limits

macOS 26 Time Machine

Buffalo KB6060 (updated October 13, 2025) lists LS700 as compatible with macOS 26 Time Machine, but LS700 manual 35022143-13 (March 2026), p.80, says Time Machine backups are no longer supported starting with macOS Tahoe 26. The documents conflict; obtain firmware-specific confirmation before relying on this backup workflow.[2][10]

Check the conflict

Containers, VMs and transcoding

The cited documents do not establish these workloads for this exact appliance.[1]

Limited fit

USB expansion / NAS-to-USB backup

HFS+ is read-only from the NAS; NTFS/HFS+/exFAT cannot be formatted in Settings; hubs and extra partitions are unsupported.[10]

Living with it

What matters in everyday use

01

Keep another copy of the 4TB drive

Choose the 4TB package as shared space or a secondary backup destination; its one disk leaves no internal recovery path after drive failure. Deletion, malware and a lost enclosure still require a separate backup.[1]

02

What the 2.5GbE port changes

A 2.5GbE switch or compatible client is required to use the faster link. The only original CrystalDiskMark table for LS710D0401 that we read was on 1 GbE (116.80/89.69 MB/s SEQ1M Q8T1). Buffalo Japan's 234.3/188.4 MB/s figure is a different /N SKU and 2.5GbE recipe.[1][8][7]

03

Check your Mac backup version first

Buffalo KB6060 (updated October 13, 2025) lists LS700 as compatible with macOS 26 Time Machine, but LS700 manual 35022143-13 (March 2026), p.80, says Time Machine backups are no longer supported starting with macOS Tahoe 26. The documents conflict; obtain firmware-specific confirmation before relying on this backup workflow.[2][10]

04

A storage appliance with a defined scope

The US pages describe file sharing, USB backup and WebAccess. The LS700 manual adds USB filesystem limits, full/incremental/differential/management backup, LVM erase-on-create, and no hot-swap. Management backup is not a native Btrfs/ZFS snapshot. Docker/VM hosting, NVMe expansion and hardware transcoding are still not established.[1][10]

05

1 GbE CrystalDiskMark on a Japan LS710D0401, not 2.5GbE line rate

On a Japan LS710D0401 4TB sample, CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 x64 Admin (5 runs, 1 GiB, folder selection, MB/s) on a 1 Gbps home LAN measured SEQ1M Q8T1 116.80/89.69 MB/s read/write. The same chart shows SEQ1M Q1T1 96.67/93.95 and RND4K Q32T1 11.29/35.06 MB/s. That is not 2.5GbE and not Buffalo Japan's LS710D0401/N 234.3/188.4 MB/s recipe (CDM 5.12, Sequential Q=32 T=2, 2 GiB). The blog caption saying Mbps is a unit error; the screenshot unit is MB/s. Do not treat random I/O as proof of hexa-core CPU benefit or long-term reliability. ChooseCompute did not test LS710D0401.[8][7]

06

Power ratings disagree

The official web table says 46 W maximum while its PDF says 36 W. Both are ratings, so neither supports an idle-power or annual-running-cost estimate.[1][4]

Questions before buying

How much of the 4TB can I use?

The single included HDD has 4TB raw capacity; filesystem and system overhead reduce usable space. There is no second internal disk for mirroring.[1]

Does LS710D0401 support new macOS 26 Time Machine backups?

Buffalo KB6060 (updated October 13, 2025) lists LS700 as compatible with macOS 26 Time Machine, but LS700 manual 35022143-13 (March 2026), p.80, says Time Machine backups are no longer supported starting with macOS Tahoe 26. The documents conflict; obtain firmware-specific confirmation before relying on this backup workflow.[2][10]

Is the HDD model supplied in the box guaranteed?

The exact current-stock HDD revision is not guaranteed in the reviewed documents. Historical review samples do not establish what a new order contains.[1]

Can I add memory, SSD cache or containers later?

No supported upgrade path or container-host workload was established in the cited US documents. Buy this configuration for its documented file and backup functions.[1]

What does the standard package mean for warranty?

The current Buffalo Americas warranty table lists 2 years for LinkStation 210/220/710/720. Check US seller eligibility and retain proof of purchase.[3]

Does remote access replace a backup?

No. WebAccess provides another way to reach the same stored files. It does not create a separate copy that survives device loss or data deletion.[1]

Will LS710D0401 fill a 2.5GbE link?

Not in the 1 GbE user test we have. CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 on a Japan LS710D0401 measured SEQ1M Q8T1 116.80/89.69 MB/s on 1 Gbps Ethernet. Buffalo Japan published 234.3/188.4 MB/s on LS710D0401/N with CrystalDiskMark 5.12 Sequential Q=32 T=2 (2 GiB) on a 2.5GbE NIC and switch. Those are different setups. This 4TB unit has no internal RAID.[8][7]
