Is the LincStation S1 right for you?

Home Unraid with 3.5-inch HDDs plus NVMe cache

Current official pages and both original tests use 3.5-inch top sleds and two M.2 slots.[1][4][5]

Good fit

Plex in Docker on 8GB

AppleInsider streamed four transcodes until extra containers cut that to three; they tell buyers to add RAM. Codecs, output resolutions and client models were not disclosed, so these counts are not a general transcoding guarantee.[4]

Consider

Built-in 10GbE or a PCIe network upgrade

The S1 has two 2.5GbE ports and no documented PCIe NIC expansion. The included Unraid license remains usable after the update year; later updates require renewal.[1][4]

Living with it

Hardware, software and ownership tradeoffs

01

Four full-size HDD bays plus two NVMe slots

The current US hardware table and English manual list four 2.5/3.5-inch SATA bays. AppleInsider and igor’sLAB installed full-size drives from the top. The store FAQ contains inconsistent 2.5-inch-only boilerplate; the model-specific table, manual and original hardware tests establish 3.5-inch support.[1][2][5]

02

8GB is replaceable; the official max is unpublished

Factory 8GB DDR5 SODIMM (Igor: Samsung M425R1GB4BB0-CQK). AppleInsider says add 16GB for Docker. Amazon’s “up to 16GB” title was not verified because the PDP was blocked.[2][4][5]

03

Preserve vendor LCD and LED support during Unraid updates

Igor’s sample lost the LCD after an Unraid 6-to-7 update and recovered with a vendor ISO. This was a historical update failure, not proof that all Unraid 7 installations fail. LincPlus’s recovery guide also provides manual restoration of custom features; a full reinstall is not the only documented route.[5][3]

What original tests found

Our buying advice combines official specifications with the original reviews below. We have not tested this product ourselves. Expand a review for its setup, measurements and limitations.

AppleInsider

Mike WuertheleJul 31, 2025

AppleInsider: 32–66 W, Plex 4→3 transcodes on 8GB

Mike Wuerthele’s S1 with mixed HDD+SSD Unraid streamed Plex to four transcode clients until Radarr/Sonarr cut that to three. Idle about 32 W with disks asleep; 66 W at peak. He would add RAM and still wants 10GbE that this chassis cannot add. Codecs, resolutions and client models are undisclosed; its contradictory “70% of 10-gig” comment is excluded.

AppleInsider LincStation S1 original test

Tested: LincStation S1 with two SSDs and four hard drives; Unraid; Plex plus Radarr/Sonarr Docker. Exact HDD/SSD MPNs not listed.

Applies to: Direct for S1 hardware, qualitative Plex and reported power in this setup. The “70% of 10-gig” statement conflicts with stock dual 2.5GbE and is rejected as a network performance result. Suggested 16GB RAM is advice, not a tested or official maximum.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Drive MPNs omitted.
  • The “70% of 10-gig” statement is incompatible with the stock dual 2.5GbE interfaces and is not adopted. Plex codecs, resolutions and client models are undisclosed.

igor’sLAB

Tim KutznerOct 16, 2025

igor’sLAB: 2.5GbE saturate, 1.9–26.5 W, Unraid 7 LCD break

Tim Kutzner’s gifted S1 confirmed top-loading 3.5-inch sleds. Unraid 6→7 blanked the LCD until a vendor ISO. On Unraid 7.1, OpenSpeedTest hit 2446/2454 Mbps on one 2.5GbE path; Geekbench 6 was 1310/3212 as LincPlus TVD7321X. Socket power 1.9/11.7/26.5 W with one NVMe. Spec photo says 64G eMMC; his conclusion and the US page say 128GB.

Tested: Manufacturer-provided S1, no payment. Factory Unraid 6, later Unraid 7.1 (YABS 2025-07-19: Unraid OS 7.1 x86_64, kernel 6.12.24, Intel N97, 7.5 GiB RAM). Geekbench model LincPlus TVD7321X.
