Four M.2, 8GB soldered, dual 2.5GbE — flash in a laptop-sized box

US MPN TBS-464-8G-US · diskless · 8GB DDR4 soldered · N5105 · 4×M.2 2280 Gen3×2 · dual 2.5GbE

Research draft from QNAP’s hardware table, StorageReview’s 8GB RAID 5 synthetics, and NASCompares’ first-hand tour. ChooseCompute has not tested this unit. Treat 128K ~570 MB/s as dual-2.5GbE saturation on fast SSDs, not as a 10GbE or single-client HDD number. See the review evidence ↓

Hardware, storage and network planning

01

Official identity

Hardware tab: N5105, 8 GB DDR4 not expandable, four M.2 2280 NVMe Gen3×2 (diskless), dual 2.5GbE, HDMI 2.0 4K60, USB 2.0×3 + USB 3.2 Gen 1×2, 60W adapter, 18 W standby / 28 W typical with drives populated, 2-year warranty. hardware-page QTS 5.2.9 / QuTS hero h5.2.9 feature tables (version-bound). h6.0.2 is a later listed branch.[1][8]

02

StorageReview numbers with labels

4×2TB Rocket 4 Plus and 4×8TB Rocket Q4, RAID 5, both 2.5GbE trunked. 128K sequential 578/572 MB/s read/write SMB and iSCSI. 4K iSCSI read 88,672 / 89,711 IOPS. 49,578 / 52,370 IOPS are 8K mixed 70/30 iSCSI writes, not 4K writes.[5]

03

What NASCompares adds

Hands-on confirmation of size, heatsinks, soldered 8GB, Gen3×2 slots. Single-port 294/287 MB/s figures in that article are QNAP’s IronWolf 510 RAID 5 claim.[6]

04

Companion NASCompares video (same original experiment as the written tour)

Auto-caption 91Ts4x8RHCQ 0:00–33:43 read; no frames; no original audio. Four SSDs in operation described as very quiet versus HDD NAS; internal fan stays on because NVMe runs hot. Not dBA and not a second lab.[7][6]

05

Available QuTS hero branch versus 5.2.9 feature tables

QNAP’s QuTS hero h6.0.2.3591 (build 20260819) release notes dated 2026-08-24 list TBS-464 (listed with HS-264 / TS-x64 family) among applicable models. That confirms a published h6.0.2 branch for this family. The hardware spec page still publishes QTS 5.2.9 and QuTS hero h5.2.9 feature tables; those rows stay version-bound. This page does not claim every 5.2 table feature is unchanged on h6.0.2, and it does not document an install.[8][1]

RAID 5 charted 4K/8K/128K with protocol split

StorageReview QTS 5.0, two RAID5 arrays, trunked 2.5GbE. 4K iSCSI reads 88,672 (2TB) / 89,711 (8TB) IOPS; SMB 4K ~24–26k. 128K ~577–579k KB/s read. 49,578/52,370 iSCSI writes are 8K 100% sequential, not mixed 70/30. Mixed 70/30 latency charts unlabeled except ~16 ms SMB / ~5 ms iSCSI endpoints.

QNAP TBS-464 Mini All-Flash NAS Review

Tested: 8GB TBS-464; QTS 5.0; RAID 5 4×2TB Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus vs 4×8TB Rocket Q4; SMB and iSCSI; dual 2.5GbE port trunking; 16T×16Q steady-state; mixed profiles 2×2 to 16×16.

Applies to: Exact TBS-464-8G.

  • Sequential 128K saturates dual 2.5GbE on both arrays. Random 4K iSCSI reads ~89k IOPS; SMB 4K is much lower. Fan nearly inaudible qualitatively — not a no-fan design.Source location: Performance / conclusion
  • Article inserts the 8K 100% sequential read/write chart in the mixed-workload introduction. 49,578 / 52,370 iSCSI write IOPS are 8K 100% sequential, not 8K 70/30 mixed IOPS.Source location: 8K throughput chart vs 8K 70/30 latency charts

Questions before buying

Will four NVMe SSDs run at Gen4 speeds?

No. Official slots are PCIe Gen3×2. StorageReview used Gen4 Sabrent cards and still hit the 2.5GbE wall.[1][5]

Can I add 10GbE?

No PCIe slot on this NASbook. Dual 2.5GbE with optional USB 5GbE adapters is the documented path.[1][6]

Is it silent?

One system fan; no HDD actuators. StorageReview and NASCompares describe it as very quiet. No independent dBA.[5][6]

Hot-swap M.2?

M.2 is not hot-swap. Power down to change SSDs.[1][6]

8GB enough?

Official max is 8GB soldered. Fine for file service; tight for many VMs.[1]
