A diskless four-bay NAS with 8GB RAM and dual 2.5GbE for home files, media and light containers. Plan upgrades around your workload and confirm the memory revision before buying.

Diskless TS-464-8G / TS-464-8G-US; factory 8GB, current socketed-memory revision.

Official TS-464-8G: 8 GB SODIMM since 2024/01, HDMI 2.1 on this round’s hardware page. Lab501 (pages 1–9 prose; charts on page 8 read here) used 8GB, QTS 5.2, two 10TB IronWolf Pro RAID0 plus KC2000 cache. Dual-port CDM 589/586 MB/s is NAS 2×2.5GbE to the PC, not a 10GbE card in the NAS. Makotomatic’s 255.7/267.3 MB/s is aged 3TB RAID5. MyBest has SSD and HDD CDM plus a 5 GB copy; RAM revision is unstated. Digital Citizen measured ~110 MB/s on gigabit. ChooseCompute has not tested the unit. See the review evidence ↓

Home files and media

Dual network ports, USB backup and HDMI provide several access paths.[1]

Useful 2.5GbE hardware

Light containers

x86 software and 8GB memory support a small application set.[1]

Room for modest services

Heavy virtual machines

A Celeron is not a replacement for a larger server.[4]

CPU limits matter

ZFS deduplication

Inline deduplication needs at least 16GB.[2]

Living with it

QTS, upgrades and everyday use

01

QTS vs QuTS hero: choose before storing data

QTS uses EXT4 and supports tiered storage. QuTS hero uses ZFS, with different cache and memory requirements. Read the appropriate table for your intended installation. Changing OS requires a planned migration and a separate backup; existing EXT4 and ZFS storage cannot be switched in place.[1][2]

02

RAM, NVMe and 2.5GbE: plan upgrades around the workload

Start with capacity and backup, then client/network speed. Dual 2.5GbE ports do not automatically double one file transfer; client, switch and protocol configuration determine whether traffic can use both links. Add NVMe or a PCIe card for a defined workload.[1]

03

File copies, SSD tests and virtualization answer different questions

LAB501’s socketed8GB unit with two10TB HDDs in RAID0 and two1TB NVMe cache drives reached294/293MB/s on one2.5GbE link and589/586MB/s in its configured dual-link test. These are not redundant HDD RAID5 results. Makotomatic’s older four-drive RAID5 measured255.7MB/s write and267.3MB/s read on one2.5GbE path. Separate SSD tests and Gigabit everyday access do not establish a heavy-VM count.[16][15][5][7]

Budget drives, backups and network equipment

The price buys an empty enclosure. Add drives, an independent backup destination and a 2.5GbE-capable client/switch where needed.[1]

    Check memory and operating system

Confirm SODIMM stock. QuTS hero starts at 8GB, but inline deduplication needs 16GB; its read-cache RAM needs also differ from QTS.[1][2][3]

    Optional functions can add costs

Expansion cards, a remote, decoder/player licenses and additional camera/cloud licenses are separate. QVR Pro and QVR Surveillance have different entitlement tables; verify the app you intend to use.[1][8]

    Questions before buying

Does this page cover the older 4GB version?

No. It covers TS-464-8G, sold in the US as TS-464-8G-US. Current official hardware uses socketed DDR4; confirm old-stock revision.[1]

Will the two ports double one file transfer?

Port trunking does not automatically double one ordinary connection. Client, switch and protocol configuration determine whether traffic can use multiple links.[1]

Can I switch between QTS and QuTS hero freely?

Switching is a planned migration: back up data elsewhere and remove drives before changing OS. EXT4 and ZFS storage are not interchangeable in place.[2]

Does factory memory support inline ZFS deduplication?

No. QNAP requires at least 16GB for inline deduplication, while this enclosure ships with 8GB. Compression is a separate feature.[2]

Can I upgrade the TS-464-8G RAM?

The current SODIMM version supports an official maximum of 16GB using two 8GB modules. Confirm the hardware revision before buying older stock: earlier 8GB units may have fixed memory.[1]

Is QuTS hero h6.0.2 listed for this model?

The hardware-page software tables still print QTS 5.2.9 and, where present, QuTS hero h5.2.9. Those strings are the versions on that table, not a claim that they are the newest firmware. QuTS hero h6.0.2.3591 (release notes dated 2026-08-24) lists this family among Applicable Models. That listing is not a hands-on install on the US 8G SKU.[1][17]
