Storage
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Internal usable capacity | Approximately 3.45 TB[1] Manufacturer approximation after system reservation; distinguish this from raw decimal TB and folder quotas. |
|---|---|
| Internal redundancy and upgrades | One factory-installed HDD; no RAID mirror or documented internal capacity upgrade[3] A USB drive is separate storage or a backup target. It does not turn the internal disk into a redundant array. |
Connectivity
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| USB direct-computer mode | Not supported[3] USB-A/C ports connect external drives, not a USB cable for PC/Mac direct storage access. |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi and network expansion | No built-in Wi-Fi; one Gigabit Ethernet port[3][1] Connect the appliance to a router or switch by Ethernet. A wireless client can then access it over the network. |
System and accounts
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Operating system | BeeStation Manager / BeeStation OS[2] This appliance does not expose the general DSM Package Center of a DiskStation. |
|---|---|
| Initial setup and remote account | Internet connection and portal setup; Synology, Google or Apple sign-in[2] Physical setup confirmation is required. Plan account recovery as part of ownership. |
| Offline local access | Local IP and local account through browser or SMB after initial setup[2] Enable local access before an outage; desktop/mobile app sign-in without Internet is not supported by the current product FAQ. |
| Invited user limit | Up to 8 invited users[2] The invitation limit is separate from tested concurrent SMB connections; it is not a guarantee for eight heavy workloads. |
| Network configuration and updates | DHCP or static IP; manual or automatic system updates; storage usage by user[2] Internet-disconnected or uninitialized units do not enter HDD hibernation according to the software limitations. |
File services
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| SMB and Time Machine | SMB2, SMB2 with large MTU, SMB3; Time Machine for macOS 12+[2] Local account and SMB must be enabled. No SMB recycle bin; personal data is isolated, while preconfigured Media/Time Machine and allowed USB shares have different permissions. |
|---|---|
| SMB concurrency test | 8 concurrent SMB connections[2] Manufacturer test included two simultaneous BeePhotos mobile backups; real results depend on the workload. |
| Time Machine and Media folder quotas | 2 TB per folder[2] This is a preset limit for each named folder, not the total usable disk capacity. The original BST150-4T does not support Plex Media Server. |
File system
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Internal filesystem and name limits | Btrfs; filename 255 bytes; path 4,096 bytes[2] UTF-8 characters can occupy multiple bytes. Application-specific limits can be stricter. |
|---|---|
| SMB workgroup name | Up to 15 characters[2] Restricted punctuation is excluded; see System Settings → Limitations for the exact reserved-character list. |
Protection and recovery
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Automatic internal restore points | Daily snapshots when space permits; up to 30 days[2] Older points expire. These remain on the same disk and do not protect against failure or loss of the appliance. |
|---|---|
| Restore-point exclusions | System folder, TimeMachine, Media and application settings are excluded[2] Snapshot-powered restore points do not mean that every folder or system setting is recoverable. |
| External backup targets | BeeProtect, C2 Storage, a Synology NAS or an external drive[2] Scheduled daily or selected-weekday backups; compression, deduplication and resumable transfer are documented. |
| Backup encryption and logs | Client-side/transfer encryption: AES-256 and RSA-2048; HTML or CSV logs[2] Protect the encryption key and verify a restore. The existence of encryption is not a promise that every local folder is encrypted at rest. |
| Backup version ceilings | BeeProtect: up to 8; C2, Synology NAS or external drive: up to 256[2] Available capacity and service plan still constrain retention; oldest versions are removed first. |
| Backup format and cross-device restore | .hbk for multiple-version tasks; Hyper Backup Explorer for external-drive archives[2] A BeeStation archive cannot restore a Synology NAS, or vice versa. Reset deletes the task, while existing backup files remain. |
| Data omitted from appliance backups | Attached external-drive contents are excluded[2] Back up USB contents separately. Do not assume a connected USB drive is automatically covered by the BeeStation backup task. |
BeeFiles
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| File organization, access and sharing | Labels, stars, combined filters, browser previews, shared spaces and public links[2] Public links can have passwords/expiry; viewer and contributor permissions are separate. Cloud/USB/computer views require their respective configuration. |
|---|---|
| File history | Up to 32 versions; retention 7, 30, 60 or 120 days, or indefinitely[2] Enable version history; this differs from 30-day internal restore points and external backup retention. |
| Preview size limits | Images 100 MB; text 8 MB; archives 50 MB; DOCX 50 MB; XLSX 10 MB; PPTX 100 MB; PDF 100 MB; PSD 500 MB[2] Actual preview support depends on browser/OS. Storing a file and previewing it are separate capabilities. |
| Browser upload and path limits | Up to 5,000 files per drag-and-drop upload; file/folder names within 256 characters[2] Reserved system names and path punctuation are disallowed. Filesystem byte limits may apply first. |
Cloud synchronization
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Supported providers and modes | Google Drive/Shared Drive, OneDrive/Home/Business, Dropbox/Team Space; two-way sync or download-only[2] Download-only mode retains local files after cloud deletions. No incremental updates: modified files are transferred again in full. |
|---|---|
| Concurrent transfers | Between 3 and 20 upload/download files[2] Provider speed and size policies still apply; cloud-service events are not recorded by BeeFiles. |
| Google Drive restrictions | Single file ≤5 TB; Google Docs skipped by two-way sync or converted to Office in one-way mode[2] These are documented integration limits and can change with the provider. |
| OneDrive restrictions | Single file ≤100 GB; note documents excluded; home shared folders excluded[2] Business: filename ≤128 characters, complete path ≤308; extra reserved names/punctuation apply. |
| Dropbox restrictions | Single file ≤350 GB; no more than 5,000 folders; seven-day upload-duration constraint[2] Reserved Dropbox names and cache paths are excluded. |
| Common path exclusions | Paths over 2,048 characters, filenames over 255 characters, NFD characters and reserved system names[2] The full software source lists additional punctuation, prefixes and special folders that are excluded from sync. |
USB storage
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Recognized external filesystems | ext3, ext4, FAT32, NTFS, Btrfs, exFAT and HFS+[2] Unrecognized formats do not mount through the supported interface. |
|---|---|
| Import and automatic backup | Owner-only USB backup; newly added/changed files imported; rename or overwrite conflicts[2] External files can be browsed remotely without being copied into internal storage; permissions can be limited to selected users. |
| External file and sharing limits | Names within 143 characters (up to 47 non-Latin); paths within 2,048 characters[2] No direct public sharing, labels/stars or version history for external files. Deletion bypasses the recycle bin; copy to My Files before public sharing. |
| Large import responsiveness | Transfers of 100 GB or more may slow page loading and other operations[2] A manufacturer caution about simultaneous HDD activity, not an independent performance result. |
BeeFiles mobile
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Offline and secure access | Mark files offline; cached previews; passcode/biometric lock; iOS PDF annotation[2] Offline access requires a downloaded/cached copy within the configured cache size; provider tasks are configured on the web/desktop first. |
|---|---|
| Full mobile file-format list | Supported file formats that can be opened in the BeeFiles app (may vary based on iOS/Android device): Documents: doc (iOS only), docx, pdf, ppt (iOS only), pptx, txt, xls (iOS only), xlsx, htm, html iWork files (iOS only): key, key.zip, numbers, numbers.zip, pages, pages.zip Images: jpg, jpe, jpeg, png, gif, bmp, tif, tiff, heic, heif (iOS only), ico, psd (iOS only), RAW (3fr, arw, srf, sr2, crw, cr2, dcr, k25, kdc, dng, erf, mef, mos, mrw, nef, orf, pef, raf, raw, rw2, x3f) Videos: mp4, m4v, mov, qt (iOS only), mkv (Android only) Audio files: mp3, m4a, aa, aiff, aifc, aif, wav, m4b, m4r, m4p (Android only)[2] OS-specific formats are explicitly qualified in the list; client playback support can differ. |
BeePhotos
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Organization and sharing | People/Subjects/Places/Tags and similar-item albums; virtual/conditional albums; date, metadata and camera filters[2] Face naming/merging and object visibility controls are documented. Shared collection links can restrict password, expiry and per-file size. |
|---|---|
| Photo and video formats | BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, RAW, TIFF; MOV/MP4; Live Photos and 360° media[2] Both image and video components are required for Live Photos. RAW and video preview support depends on the client. |
| Preview generation for HEIF/HEVC and other video | Synology Image Assistant required for additional previews or compressed videos[2] Affected images include HEIF/HEIC/HIF. Affected videos include HEVC MOV/MP4, AVI/DivX, WMV/XviD and other formats listed in the source. Original playback remains device/browser dependent. |
| Large imports and similar items | 5,000-file browser upload limit; desktop transfer advised for 100 GB+; GIF/WebP not stacked[2] Windows HEIF/HEVC extensions can move preview work to the computer and reduce NAS load. |
| iCloud import conditions | iCloud web access required; not supported with Advanced Data Protection or app-specific passwords[2] This integration depends on Apple interfaces. Do not weaken an account security choice merely to assume import compatibility. |
BeePhotos mobile
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Mobile backup and playback | Focused foreground backup, space release after backup, map view, cached access; Chromecast and iOS AirPlay[2] For iOS, notifications and charging help avoid backup interruption. Delayed sync between devices sharing iCloud can leave photos temporarily unbacked-up. |
|---|
Desktop client
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Windows CPU and platform requirements | Windows 10 2004/build 19041+ or Windows 11; AVX-capable CPU[2] Windows on ARM and Windows Server are excluded; the desktop app cannot run with administrator privileges. |
|---|---|
| macOS and connection requirements | macOS 12.3+; no IPv6 connection support[2] Mounted network/removable drives cannot be selected as standard sync/backup folders. |
| Sync and backup modes | On-demand My Files; two-way computer folder sync; one-way computer or photo backup[2] On-demand folder path selection is Windows-only. Restore history is configured in BeeFiles versioning. |
| File, task and concurrency limits | 500,000 files total; up to 63 sync/backup tasks on Windows; three computers in the documented test[2] Manufacturer concurrency test: each computer syncing 30 GB with about 5 MB average file size; not a guarantee for another file mix. |
| Local path limits | Windows path ≤247 characters; macOS path ≤768 and filename ≤255 characters[2] Hidden/system/temp files, shortcuts, symlinks, aliases, PST and other listed file types are excluded; root/home directories cannot be chosen. |
| Overlapping sync and photo duplication | Avoid paths already managed by another on-demand service; repeated photo imports can duplicate items[2] Files with 8.3-style names can collide; changes inside unrecognized mounted folders may not be detected. |
| Photo Transfer and Apple account constraints | No app-specific passwords; no Advanced Data Protection; iCloud web access required[2] A physical security key attached to a Mac can interfere with receiving an Apple verification code during Photo Transfer. |
Media and cameras
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Plex Media Server | Not supported on BST150-4T[2] Do not transfer the Plus model’s application support to the original 4 TB model. |
|---|---|
| BeeCamera | Not supported on BST150-4T[2] Current hardware/client matrix lists BeeCamera only for Plus models. |
Ownership
Full values, version requirements and purchase conditions.
| Acronis promotion | Three-year Acronis True Image Essentials license for one computer[3] US/Canada included among eligible regions; redeem within 90 days of first Synology-account sign-in or by 2028-09-29, whichever is earlier. Promotion terms may change; verify eligibility before buying. |
|---|---|
| Optional service costs | BeeProtect/C2 subscriptions, optional Plex Pass, external backup storage and cameras[3][2] Basic local storage does not require a recurring storage subscription. Trials and bundled licenses have separate eligibility and expiration terms. |
| Long-term reliability and acoustic evidence | No fleet failure-rate or reproducible acoustic measurement established[1] Hardware warranty and a short review do not establish lifetime data safety. A single internal disk needs a separate backup. |
Exact product identity & open questions
- Merchant listing templates: Newegg (and previously Best Buy) marketing bullets for BST150-4T still show 2 GB RAM, an SD slot, and a Cortex-A55 1.4GHz blurb. The same page's spec table correctly lists BST150-4T, RTD1619B, 1 GB DDR4. Official API also lists a separate BST151-4T 2 GB SKU.
- Current software performance: TechRadar's 1 GB desktop-sync restart bug is launch-era; this round did not re-test current BeeStation desktop software.
- Video: Full videos and transcripts were not reviewed. Embedded article screenshots were checked where recorded; this is not a complete video review.
- Retail price dates: Newegg buyboxes were rechecked on 2026-09-11; B&H returned 403. Other retailer observations retain their original dates. Prices and seller selection can change.
