Who this BeeStation fits

Phone photos and personal files

Integrated HDD and focused BeeFiles/BeePhotos apps reduce setup choices; large initial photo imports still take time.[1][2]

Good fit

Time Machine

Mac backups must fit the preset 2 TB folder quota, and local SMB access must be configured.[2]

Check the limits

Expandable application server

No internal RAID or documented capacity upgrade; the focused software platform does not establish general VM/container hosting.[2][3]

Living with it

What to confirm before buying

01

Choose capacity using the folder quotas

The built-in HDD is 4 TB raw. Time Machine and Media each have a preset 2 TB folder limit; these are different from total usable storage. Internal capacity has no documented upgrade path.[1][2][3]

02

Set up local access before an outage

Initial setup needs Internet and an account. Local browser/SMB access can work afterward when enabled, but offline sign-in through desktop/mobile apps is not supported by the current FAQ. USB-C connects external drives and cannot make BeeStation a direct USB drive for your computer.[3][2]

03

Give the single disk a separate backup

Daily internal restore points last up to 30 days and exclude some system/media folders. Keep a backup to a separate drive, Synology NAS or eligible cloud service, then check restoration; a snapshot cannot recover a physically failed disk.[2]

04

Original 4 TB is a distinct configuration

BST150-4T has 1 GB RAM. Later BST151-4T 4 TB units have 2 GB, while BST170-4T is a different Plus model. This original appliance does not gain Plex or BeeCamera simply because those features appear on the current family page.[1][2]

Typical SMB transfer range: 75–95 MB/s. A 1 GB desktop-sync attempt repeatedly restarted on two Windows installations, while direct SMB copying worked. Launch-era software only; this does not show that the same sync fault remains today.

PCMag original Synology BeeStation file-transfer test

PCMag copied a 4.9 GB mixed folder at 92 MBps each way on Gigabit Ethernet with the 4 TB 5400rpm drive, and needed 4.5 minutes to back up 230 iPhone photos plus 10 videos. That is usable home backup speed, not a multi-gig NAS.

Included drive, separate protection costs

The 4 TB HDD is included. Add independent backup capacity and account for paid BeeProtect/C2 services if chosen. Optional services are separate from the basic local-storage purchase.[1][3]

Read bundled-license conditions

The current family offer describes Acronis True Image Essentials for one computer for three years, with region and redemption deadlines. A trial or license is not an unlimited cloud-backup subscription.[3]

BeeStation questions that affect the purchase

Can I use all 4 TB for Time Machine?

No. The Time Machine folder has a preset 2 TB limit. The advertised 4 TB is raw drive capacity, not the backup-folder quota.[2]

Can I connect it directly to a computer by USB-C?

No. USB is for attached storage. File access from a computer goes through the network.[3]

Can I use it if the Internet goes down?

Yes through a previously enabled local account and browser/SMB. Initial setup needs Internet, and the current FAQ excludes offline desktop/mobile app sign-in.[3]

Does it run full Synology DSM applications?

No. BeeStation has a focused software platform. Plex and BeeCamera are not supported on the BST150-4T.[2]

Do restore points replace another backup?

No. Restore points remain on the internal disk, have limited retention and exclude specific folders/settings. A separate backup is necessary for appliance failure or loss.[2]
