32GB of memory for extra services, with a 2.5GbE ceiling per port

F4-424 Pro 32GB · Intel Core i3-N305 · 8-core · 32GB DDR5 · 3.5-inch SATA HDD / 2.5-inch SATA SSD / M.2 NVMe

The F4-424 Pro 32GB makes most sense when the NAS also runs services that use its eight-core N305 and supplied memory. Simple file serving often reaches its 2.5GbE limit before using that compute capacity. Original tests found useful SSD and multi-client options, but also setup friction and a four-HDD configuration that would not hibernate, so power and software behavior deserve attention. Is the F4-424 Pro 32GB right for you?

Memory-heavy containers on a four-bay NAS

ComputerBase’s four-HDD RAID 5 read a 5.9 GB file at 281.28 MB/s over one port. Multi-client bonding raised reading to 556.27 MB/s. Neither result proves a specific VM/container count or a single-link 5GbE transfer.[6]

Good fit

Home labs using TOS and 32GB from day one

Two mirrored IronWolf 510 SSDs improved some repeated reads and writes, while other results barely changed or became slower. Choose cache versus a separate SSD volume according to the workload, not a blanket speed claim.[6]

Good fit with planning

16GB is enough for the planned services

ComputerBase measured 47.4 W idle and 60.4 W writing with four 20 TB HDDs, whose hibernation did not activate. The Gadgeteer also needed time to resolve Plex and CloudSync issues before smooth use. These results concern specific older TOS builds.[6][4]

Hardware, software and ownership tradeoffs

01

Extra CPU and RAM help services more than basic copies

ComputerBase’s four-HDD RAID 5 read a 5.9 GB file at 281.28 MB/s over one port. Multi-client bonding raised reading to 556.27 MB/s. Neither result proves a specific VM/container count or a single-link 5GbE transfer.[6]

02

SSD cache changes particular workloads

Two mirrored IronWolf 510 SSDs improved some repeated reads and writes, while other results barely changed or became slower. Choose cache versus a separate SSD volume according to the workload, not a blanket speed claim.[6]

03

Check hibernation and apps after setup

ComputerBase measured 47.4 W idle and 60.4 W writing with four 20 TB HDDs, whose hibernation did not activate. The Gadgeteer also needed time to resolve Plex and CloudSync issues before smooth use. These results concern specific older TOS builds.[6][4]

Terramaster F4-424 Pro NAS Review

Strong hardware value for 32GB/8-core at launch pricing, but no 10GbE and Intel's 16GB CPU memory note is flagged. Dual 2.5GbE is the network limit.

Terramaster F4-424 Pro NAS Review

Tested: F4-424 Pro with 32GB DDR5 described; dual 2.5GbE; two M.2; TOS 5 era. CPU marketed as i3 N300; a comment states Intel Core i3-N305.

Applies to: Matches this 32GB SKU for RAM. CPU naming N300 vs N305 is a documented conflict. Not the 16GB SKU.

  • Strong hardware value for 32GB/8-core at launch pricing, but no 10GbE and Intel's 16GB CPU memory note is flagged. Dual 2.5GbE is the network limit.Source location: Verdict / memory discussion

Limits to keep in mind

  • Live nascompares.com 403; Wayback body used.
  • No chart page captured as images.
  • CPU N300/N305 naming conflict.
  • TOS 5 era software comments.
  • Much of the TOS prose references older T6-423/T9-450 models and 2023 beta software. Those observations are not adopted as exact-model application tests.
  • Speculative M.2 x2 lane claims conflict with official PCIe 3.0 x1. Embedded CPU graphic names N300; no quantified transcoding result is adopted.

TerraMaster F4-424 Pro NAS review – powerful, fast, and relatively affordable

Tested: Gifted 32 GB F4-424 Pro; three 4 TB WD Red SA500 SATA SSDs, default TRAID/Btrfs with 7.26 TB usable. TOS 5.1.123 and TNAS PC 5.1.352 shown; Windows 11 laptop and Pixel 6 Pro. No controlled network-transfer method.

Applies to: 32GB SKU qualitative experience, not 16GB.

  • Initial setup required troubleshooting guidance, repeated Google Drive CloudSync reconnection and Plex folder visibility/permissions. A manual Plex package update helped.Source location: Setup and software
  • Once configured, USB copying and CloudSync ran together smoothly, and the SSD setup was subjectively quiet. Snapshots were created, but a restore was not tested.Source location: Performance and conclusion

Limits to keep in mind

  • Manufacturer gift; article says opinions were independent.
  • Displayed 24–461 MB/s USB-copy progress varied and is not a reproducible network benchmark.
  • The quiet result used SSDs; HDMI 2.1 in the article conflicts with the official 2.0b specification.

TerraMaster F4-424 Pro NAS review

The side panel gave easy access to RAM and M.2 sockets. A Corsair SSD with an integrated heatsink prevented the cover from closing. Both USB ports are at the rear and no PCIe NIC slot is available.

TerraMaster F4-424 Pro NAS review

Tested: 32 GB DDR5, TOS 5.1; drives, RAID, exact client and workload not disclosed. The article repeatedly names N300 rather than official N305.

Applies to: Physical inspection and dated software experience of the 32 GB F4-424 Pro; processor-specific assertions are excluded.

  • The side panel gave easy access to RAM and M.2 sockets. A Corsair SSD with an integrated heatsink prevented the cover from closing. Both USB ports are at the rear and no PCIe NIC slot is available.Source location: Design
  • At its 2024 review date, the Windows TerraSync client and several backup/security apps still needed polish. Additional CPU/RAM offered little advantage for simple file serving limited by 2.5GbE.Source location: Software and Performance

Limits to keep in mind

  • The approximate 280 MB/s narrative has no disclosed benchmark setup and is not presented as a controlled measurement.
  • N300/7 W TDP, speculative M.2 lane count and untested USB NIC suggestions are not adopted.
  • No measured VM/container concurrency, noise, power or current TOS 7 test.

TerraMaster F4-424 Pro im Test: Core i3 und 32 GB RAM für mehr Leistung im NAS

Tested: i3-N305, 32 GB, TOS 5.1; four 20 TB Seagate IronWolf Pro HDDs in RAID 5. Two 480 GB IronWolf 510 NVMe SSDs used separately as SSD volume or RAID 1 read/write cache. Exact build/client unspecified.

Applies to: Exact 32 GB sample; results are not assigned to the separate 16 GB SKU.

  • Single-link file reading approached 2.5GbE capacity, while the 5.9 GB file write was lower at 181.64 MB/s. SSD cache improved that write result but did not improve every workload.Source location: Pages 2–3, CIFS charts
  • Two-client bonding lifted large-file reading to 556.27 MB/s. For many files, SSD cache raised bonded reading from 215.58 to 406.55 MB/s while reducing writing from 302.76 to 229.34 MB/s.Source location: Pages 2–3, Link Aggregation charts
  • HDD hibernation did not activate in this test. The four-HDD system drew 47.4 W idle and 60.4 W writing; the cause was not established. A stuck storage pool required a reset, and some package installs and login persistence also failed.Source location: Pages 1 and 3
  • NVMe drives stayed within their thermal limit without reported throttling under sustained load. The measurements did not establish VM capacity or Plex stream counts.Source location: Page 1 and conclusion

Add suitable drives, an independent backup and any client/switch upgrades. RAID redundancy keeps some drive failures from stopping service; it does not replace a separate copy.[1]

Questions before buying

Are data drives included?

No. The listed offers are new diskless enclosures with the stated factory memory. Add compatible data drives and a separate backup target.[1]

Which software version should I expect?

The current product pages advertise TOS 7, while dated reviews and some specification text refer to earlier versions. Confirm the shipping build and required apps for the exact CPU and memory variant.[1]

Can I add a second memory module?

No. There is one SODIMM slot, so a memory upgrade replaces the existing module. The official F4-424 Pro maximum is 32 GB.[1]

Do multiple Ethernet ports guarantee faster copies to one computer?

No. Faster transfers depend on the client, workload and supported network configuration. Multi-client bonding results and network-only tests are not interchangeable with a single-computer file copy.[1]
