Is the F4 SSD right for you?

Compact all-flash shared storage

Four NVMe SSDs can serve active projects quickly, but SSD capacities, redundancy, a 5GbE client and an independent backup determine the finished cost.[1]

Good fit

Quiet workspaces using SSDs

Liliputing measured 584.77/478.19 MB/s read/write under TOS. Debian results are separate, and short benchmarks do not promise the same speed for every long transfer.[5][3]

Good fit with planning

Low-cost bulk capacity is the priority

What testing supports

Software and recovery

Keep a separate backup and test a restore. Official app listings and generic TOS help describe available features; the reviewed units do not establish every update, retention, replication or endpoint-recovery workflow.[1]

How-To Geek: N95 all-flash used for video libraries

Author moved photo/video libraries onto the F4 SSD and edited with project files local, media on NAS, without a hiccup on a 2.5GbE Mac path. No MB/s table.

How-To Geek: N95 all-flash used for video libraries

Tested: N95/8 GB DDR5, TOS 6; two 1 TB and two 2 TB NVMe SSDs (models unstated), TRAID with 4 TB usable. MacBook Pro with 1 TB internal drive and 2.5GbE network; model not specified.

Applies to: Direct first-hand on exact F4 SSD hardware. Transcode 'few 4K / half dozen 1080p' is an expectation, not a timed Plex table.

  • Author moved photo/video libraries onto the F4 SSD and edited with project files local, media on NAS, without a hiccup on a 2.5GbE Mac path.Source location: This all-SSD NAS replaced my USB-C SSD
  • USB 10 Gbps ingest of ~1 TB was chosen because it was faster than the 2.5GbE client path. Two M.2 slots are PCIe 3.0 x2 and two are x1 (N95 lane budget).Source location: USB migration / PCIe lane paragraphs
  • Docker and Quick Sync are present. 'A few 4K transcodes and over half a dozen 1080p' is framed as what you should expect with Plex Pass — not a measured run.Source location: Docker support

Limits to keep in mind

  • No MB/s table.
  • Client was 2.5GbE, not 5GbE.
  • Affiliate Amazon/B&H/direct links.
  • TOS 6 in the spec box vs TOS 7 on later TerraMaster pages.
  • Potential Plex stream counts are expectations, not measured simultaneous transcodes.
  • Nearly 1 TB USB ingest has no elapsed time or MB/s result; 60 TB Backblaze backup was still in progress.

TechRadar: cheap silent file server, not a VM box

Positioned as a small, silent, affordable NVMe file server. N95 is too weak for lots of Docker/VMs. Third-party OS (TrueNAS SCALE, Proxmox) does not void hardware warranty per the author. Affiliate disclosure.

TechRadar: cheap silent file server, not a VM box

Tested: F4 SSD, Intel N95 4C/4T, 8 GB DDR5 upgradable to 32 GB, 4× M.2 PCIe 3.0, 5GbE, TOS 6. One 30-second-review sentence says N85 — the spec table and verdict say N95; N95 is used.

Applies to: Direct qualitative on exact SKU. No MB/s chart extracted from the saved article.

  • Positioned as a small, silent, affordable NVMe file server. N95 is too weak for lots of Docker/VMs. Third-party OS (TrueNAS SCALE, Proxmox) does not void hardware warranty per the author.Source location: 30-second review / verdict
  • Works with most NVMe drives; no ECC; no USB4/Thunderbolt.Source location: Pros/cons

Limits to keep in mind

  • Affiliate disclosure.
  • N85 typo in one sentence.
  • No numeric copy table in the extract.
  • A speculative 16 GB memory limit conflicts with the official 32 GB limit.
  • OS warranty claims require manufacturer terms; no guarantee is inferred from reviewer commentary.
  • No controlled VM or multi-container capacity result.

The original includes measured 5GbE traffic and NAS file tests, not merely specifications. Default TOS setup uses mdadm/LVM/Btrfs; two slots are PCIe 3.0 x2 and two x1. Gifted review unit retained by reviewer; no manufacturer editorial approval; affiliate links.

Liliputing: exact-model original experience

Tested: N95/8 GB DDR5, four NVMe SSDs; exact drive capacities/models not fully identified. TOS 6 array, then Debian 12, ZFS/internal and KVM experiments. Network CDM uses a Windows client; 5GbE adapter path. Do not combine alternative-OS and TOS results.

Questions before buying

What does the original testing establish?

Liliputing measured 584.77/478.19 MB/s read/write under TOS. Debian results are separate, and short benchmarks do not promise the same speed for every long transfer.[5][3]

Which system version will arrive?

Current manufacturer marketing advertises TOS 7, but the exact shipping build and update-package mapping were not verified. Review results apply to the versions recorded in each test.[1]

Are storage drives included?

No. These are diskless offers. Select suitable drives and allow for RAID overhead and an independent backup.[1]

Does it have SATA bays?

No. It has four M.2 2280 NVMe slots: two PCIe 3.0 x2 and two x1. The official maximum RAM is 32 GB in one replaceable SODIMM.[1]
