Two extra bays, same 16GB ARM limit as the D4

NAS-D6 · Rockchip RK3588 · 8-core + 6-TOPS NPU · 16GB LPDDR4X (max 16GB) · 6 × SATA + 1 × M.2 · 1×2.5GbE + 1×1GbE · SD4.0+SD3.0+TF4.0 · HDMI 4K · ZettOS/Btrfs

Based on the official D4/D6 table and wiki, TechRadar and Fstoppers hands-on D6 units, an eight-month owner report, and dated US factory listings. ChooseCompute has not tested this NAS. D6 Ultra 10GbE numbers are excluded. See the review evidence ↓

Is the D6 right for you?

Six-bay photo/video archive with local AI search

Same NPU/RAM as D4 plus two bays and an extra SD slot. Fstoppers/TechRadar found AI search useful on D6 units.[1][8][9]

Good fit with planning

Wired 2.5GbE file serving

Fstoppers said WD Red HDDs saturated 2.5GbE with no MB/s table. TechRadar’s 82/65 MB/s is Wi-Fi. Do not borrow D4 PCMag 289 MBps as a D6 measurement.[9][8]

Consider — qualitative saturation only

Heavy VMs, 10GbE, or expandable RAM

Official VM page warns D4/D6 performance; Ultra is the 10GbE/DDR5 sibling. RAM max 16GB.[3][1][9]

Hardware, software and ownership tradeoffs

01

Do not confuse D6 with D6 Ultra

NAS-D6 is RK3588, 16GB LPDDR4X, 2.5GbE+1GbE, one M.2, no PCIe. D6 Ultra (Intel, dual 10GbE, expandable RAM) is a different MPN. TechRadar’s D6 Ultra 900 MB/s article is related hardware only.[1][2]

02

What was actually measured on D6

TechRadar used RAID 0 for ‘optimum’ access and reported 82/65 MB/s through a wireless router, plus 255×237×185 mm and 5980 g empty. Fstoppers (alpha firmware) said WD Red drives saturated 2.5GbE without a chart. Jamie Balfour ran RAID 6 on six 8TB drives (48TB→29TB) for eight months and still had no easy snapshot workflow. None of those are PCMag’s D4 289 MBps test.[8][9][10]

03

Same ZettOS limits as D4, more capacity

Wiki backup/update/Btrfs/file-services apply to the Standard Series. Shutdown to install drives. Thin/early apps in TechRadar and Fstoppers. Official US price $499.99 on 2026-09-11.[5][6][11]

04

AI search and Q&A use different computing paths

The exact D4/D6 official table lists AI categories, search and transcription, but explicitly assigns AI Q&A to PC computing power. Generic all-on-NAS marketing and some reviews conflict with that model-specific statement. Confirm the desktop-app requirement before buying for chat; a 6-TOPS NPU rating does not establish standalone NAS LLM performance.[1][3]

05

Current documented security and backup limits

The current wiki documents OTP two-factor authentication, administrator-verified SSH with automatic closure, firewall and certificates. Older missing-2FA/SSH reports describe their tested builds. Moving personal space pauses backup/sync tasks and requires manual restart afterward. Remote-ID photo backup uses a speed-capped relay; LAN backup is faster. These are documented workflows, not measured security or restore tests.[12][13][14]

TechRadar D6 original test

Tested: D6, RAID 0 for ‘optimum’ access, wireless router path for the numeric transfer; local LLM download (Gemma lighter model). RAM listed as LPDDR4/5 versus official LPDDR4x.

Applies to: Direct D6 RAID 0 and software experience; 82/65 MB/s used a path through the wireless network router. The NAS has no built-in Wi-Fi; the test does not isolate native wired 2.5GbE throughput.

  • 255×237×185 mm, 5980 g empty; dual rear fans subjectively quiet except at startup.Source location: Design
  • Scheduled backups, folder sync, USB/SD import, external storage mentioned as standard NAS features.Source location: Features
  • Affiliate commission disclosed. Kickstarter/site pricing in the article is historical versus this round’s $499.99.Source location: Affiliate blurb; Price
  • Image/video search worked, but ingest initially produced resource errors that cleared after several hours; shortcuts often failed to recognize commands.Source location: Performance
  • The reviewer downloaded Gemma-3-4B-IT-Q8_0 and described local LLM use. The precise compute location conflicts with the official D4/D6 table specifying PC-powered Q&A and is not adopted as verified NAS-hosted inference.Source location: Performance / local LLM

Limits to keep in mind

  • No wired MB/s table.
  • RAM type wording disagrees with official LPDDR4x.
  • No separate verification of NAS versus desktop-PC LLM execution; no measured Plex transcoding or VM workload.

Fstoppers D6 creator-NAS hands-on

Tested: Midrange D6, Rockchip + 16GB non-upgradable RAM, handful of WD Red HDDs, alpha firmware, one NVMe slot tried as cache/separate pool.

Applies to: Direct D6. 2.5GbE saturation is qualitative (no MB/s). VM/Docker advice is light-duty only.

  • WD Red HDDs saturated the 2.5GbE port; UI stayed responsive during large background copies.Source location: Hardware and Performance
  • NVMe cache support felt weak; separate NVMe pool still 2.5GbE-bound.Source location: Hardware and Performance
  • Alpha firmware felt responsive and no critical bugs were reported. Docker/Home Assistant and light VM suitability are the author’s recommendations, not demonstrated installations or measured VM tests.Source location: ZettOS and the Software Experience

Limits to keep in mind

  • No numeric MB/s or dBA.
  • Alpha unit may differ from later builds.

Owner: RAID 6 for eight months, snapshots still awkward

6×8TB → 29TB. RAID needed several tries. Keep a real backup. Do not use the 14dB placeholder.

Jamie Balfour eight-month D6 owner report

Tested: Purchased Kickstarter D6 upgrade from D4 pledge; six 8TB HDDs in RAID 6, 48TB raw and approximately 29TB displayed. Header date April 20, 2026; body contains later June/eight-month observations without a verified update timestamp.

Applies to: Single-owner D6. RAID took several attempts. Power/noise table shows Coming soon / 0 W placeholders — 14dB is not adopted.

  • RAID 6 creation succeeded after 3–4 attempts, then took 5–10 minutes to initialize. The approximately 29TB display is consistent with roughly 32TB decimal after dual parity, not a measured unexplained 19TB loss. Full synchronization and failure rebuild were not tested.Source location: Storage and Drive Management
  • No easy snapshot workflow for 5.5TB of data; off-site copy at parents’ house monthly.Source location: Backup strategy
  • Drives noisier than the chassis; spinning disks better in an office/cupboard.Source location: Noise, Heat, and Power Consumption
  • 1.5 update failed and needed support; 1.9 path changes forced a roughly 500,000-file reindex. The later 1.10 text says folder exclusions and SSH are available.Source location: Software / AI indexing
  • Syncthing actually ran in Docker for a MacBook and GPD Pocket. Weekly rsync to an 18TB USB disk and a second 14TB off-site disk were used; restore was not demonstrated.Source location: Applications / backup strategy
  • Initial DLNA MP4 discovery was fixed by toggling the service. Later mobile-app improvements qualify earlier complaints.Source location: Media / mobile software

Limits to keep in mind

  • One owner, no lab copy test.
  • Ignore placeholder 0 W / 14dB cells.

Drives and RAID 6 math

Six diskless SATA bays plus one M.2. Jamie’s 6×8TB RAID 6 yielded 29TB usable. Compatibility list is a reference; SMR not recommended; PWDIS unsupported.[1][10][7]

Network path

Wired 2.5GbE is the fast port. TechRadar 82/65 MB/s is Wi-Fi and must not be quoted as NAS throughput.[1][8]

Backup still extra

Jamie emphasized RAID ≠ backup after leaving Dropbox. Warranty excludes data.[10][4]

Questions before buying

Which exact D6 configuration does this guide cover?

It covers NAS-D6: NAS-D6 · Rockchip RK3588 · 8-core + 6-TOPS NPU · 16GB LPDDR4X · 6 × SATA HDD + M.2 NVMe SSD. Seller-installed memory or a sibling CPU variant is outside this identity.[1]

Are data drives included?

The researched configuration is an enclosure with factory OS storage where specified; user data drives are separate. Confirm the selected store variant before checkout.[1]

Does the fastest Ethernet figure guarantee that transfer speed?

No. 1 × 2.5GbE + 1 × 1GbE describes installed ports. Drives, RAID, file sizes, client adapters, switches and software determine real throughput, and multiple links are not automatically one faster client link.[1]

Which software features should be checked before buying?

The factory platform is ZettOS; exact installed build must be checked. Feature availability still depends on the installed build, packages, licenses and storage configuration; the hardware name alone does not confirm a workflow.[1]
