Is the ZimaCube 2 Standard right for you?

Flexible six-bay homelab / personal cloud

Diskless 6 SATA + 4 M.2, dual TB4, and OS choice (ZimaOS Plus or TrueNAS/Unraid/Proxmox) on an i3 that reviewers say finally has PCIe-lane headroom the N100 lacked.[1][9][10]

Good fit

Quiet-enough desk NAS

Notebookcheck measured 26.30/31.14 dB(A) at 1 m in its idle/Jellyfin+VM conditions; populated HDD arrays add noise. Room background was unspecified.[9][1]

Consider

Built-in 10GbE, fast multi-SSD, or 64 GB/GPU out of the box

No onboard 10GbE; factory RAM is 8 GB, official maximum 64 GB. Manufacturer shared-800 MB/s tray claim conflicts with original aggregate-transfer reporting.[1][14][10]

Hardware, software and ownership tradeoffs

01

What this exact Standard SKU is

Shop edition Standard (i3-1215U/8GB/256GB), SKU ZCP011, barcode 06974755831193, $799 in stock on IceWhale's US shop on 11 Sep 2026. Silver chassis in Notebookcheck; six screw-in SATA trays; 7th bay holds four M.2. Dual Intel i226 2.5GbE, dual Thunderbolt 4, HDMI + DisplayPort, two PCIe slots. ZimaOS Plus preinstalled.[1][2][3]

02

Original tests and their limits

NASCompares reports six-SATA-SSD USB4 reads of 1,700–2,000 MB/s and four-M.2 reads of 1,600 MB/s, with incomplete array conditions. Notebookcheck provides 1 m A-weighted noise and power traces. Android Central supplies qualitative install/transcode experience; TechRadar’s 280 MB/s is an estimate, not a benchmark.[13][14][9][10]

03

Software limits that still matter

Current written docs cover RAID 0/1/5/6/JBOD, scheduled backup and version/restore-point claims, computer backup and Time Machine. A documented GUI user-pool snapshot rollback and retention-control policy remain gaps; OS A/B rescue is separate.[4][5][7][8]

04

Backup claims and installation caveats

Official docs claim backup versions and restore points, but retention controls and a user-data snapshot restore procedure remain unverified. A/B recovery restores the OS boot path. Check exact-drive compatibility and allow space/cooling for a slot-powered GPU; a dual-slot card can cover both expansion positions.[5][6][7][15][1][8]

Android Central hands-on: ZimaCube 2 Standard

Tested: ZimaCube 2 Standard, Intel Core i3-1215U, silver chassis, Seagate IronWolf HDDs; ZimaOS 1.6.1 on the preinstalled ~250 GB system SSD. Dual 2.5GbE, two Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Applies to: Direct Standard qualitative experience, ZimaOS 1.6.1; the 800 MB/s statement has no documented benchmark and is excluded from measured results.

  • Drive detection was clean: Seagate IronWolf HDDs appeared immediately and could be partitioned. The original ZimaCube's unrecognized-drive/mainboard episode is not counted against this SKU.Source location: Storage install paragraph after IronWolf mention
  • Thermal behaviour is the obvious gen-2 change; the reviewer says IceWhale resolved the original ZimaCube thermal problem. Chassis and screw-in trays are unchanged.Source location: Opening / thermal-management paragraphs
  • Reviewer states about 800 MB/s SSD bandwidth without a named experiment. JBOD was absent in the June firmware, whereas current official docs list it.Source location: SSD bay and JBOD paragraphs
  • ZimaOS 1.6.1 app store (Plex, Jellyfin, Immich, Home Assistant, Tailscale, Docker) was a highlight. Hardware transcodes had 'no issues' in this qualitative pass; 8 GB RAM is tight if you stack hobby projects.Source location: ZimaOS 1.6.1 and transcode/homelab close

Limits to keep in mind

  • One Standard sample; Pro/Creator not tested.
  • No timed SMB/10GbE table.
  • JBOD note is firmware-dated (Jun 2026); later ZimaOS docs list JBOD.
  • Affiliate commission disclosed; sample origin (loan vs purchase) not stated.
  • IronWolf MPNs, count and RAID mode unspecified; hardware transcode formats, concurrent streams and frame rates unspecified.

TechRadar: IceWhale ZimaCube 2 Personal Cloud NAS review

Tested: ZimaCube 2 Standard at $799: Core i3-1215U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB NVMe, six SATA bays, four M.2, dual 2.5GbE, dual Thunderbolt 4. Affiliate links disclosed.

Applies to: Qualitative Standard review. Spec table mixes useful ports/RAID list with likely gen-1 leftovers (LPDDR5/32 GB, 19 V 11.58 A 220 W, 7.4 kg) that Cube 2 shop/unboxing/STH contradict — those three fields are not used as Cube 2 facts.

  • About 280 MB/s per 2.5GbE port is the author’s expected ceiling, not a documented measured file transfer. Thunderbolt is discussed as a faster workstation path.Source location: Performance — Network options
  • M.2 expansion is the weak link (reviewer describes Gen 3 x1-class per slot). The single PCIe 4.0 slot is the shared answer for 10GbE, faster NVMe, and GPU.Source location: Performance — Limited M.2 / expansion
  • Current shop FAQ says ZimaOS Plus is included. The article’s paid Plus upgrade claim conflicts with that primary statement and is not used as an extra purchase cost.Source location: Software / 30-second review

Limits to keep in mind

  • Affiliate disclosure.
  • Spec table conflicts with Cube 2 shop JSON on memory type/limit and PSU; those cells discarded.
  • 280 MB/s is not a captured benchmark chart.
  • Mixed-generation memory/PSU and incorrect all-Gen4 lane description discarded; no local-LLM token benchmark.
  • The 800 MB/s per-drive wording conflicts with the official shared-bandwidth FAQ and NASCompares array results.

IceWhale shop selected variant 52317031792932: $799 USD, in stock, NewCondition, 11 Sep 2026 09:57 UTC. Shipping rate at checkout not captured. Earlier same-store observation is retained in the audit, not counted as another offer.[11]

What the $799 does not include

Data drives, extra RAM, 10GbE, and a GPU. Notebookcheck/STH both warn the chassis can take a low-power GPU (70 W cap on Notebookcheck). Storage prices dominate the build, as STH notes for the Pro.[1][9][8]

Other US storefronts this round

Newegg search returned 0 items. Amazon ASIN B0H2Y597P4 appeared in search as an i3-1215U 6+4 bay listing at $899 but the PDP was a bot wall — not published. B&H/Best Buy/Adorama/Micro Center were blocked or empty.[12]

Questions before buying

Is ZimaOS Plus actually on this Standard unit?

Current shop FAQ says ZimaOS Plus is preinstalled. TechRadar’s paid-upgrade wording conflicts with this primary statement and is not included as an extra cost.[1][8][10]

How fast are the four M.2 slots?

Shop FAQ says about 800 MB/s shared on Standard; NASCompares reports 1,600 MB/s aggregate reads and other text says per-drive limits. The discrepancy is unresolved, so do not plan a guaranteed array rate from either number alone.[1][13][10]

Can I get 10GbE without buying Pro?

Not onboard. Dual 2.5GbE is the factory network. TechRadar and the shop FAQ say use the PCIe 4.0 slot for a 10GbE NIC, or Thunderbolt 4 for a direct workstation link.[1][10]

Where can I buy it new in the US today?

The only verified US new direct PDP this round is IceWhale's own shop at $799 in stock (11 Sep 2026). Newegg had no listing. An Amazon candidate could not be verified.[11][12]
