16 TB per bay for a growing shared-storage array

One 16 TB ST16000NT001 drive · 3.5-inch SATA · CMR · 7200 RPM

This guide combines Seagate DS2129.4 with two exact-MPN owner videos. GN Engenharia copied from an NVMe SSD onto a fresh ST16000NT001-3MC101; Windows Explorer showed 281 MB/s at 17% complete — not an average. Steve Bentioulis (2023) reported a new Amazon unit that clicked and was undetected on multiple SATA/power cables, filming in a Sabrent dock. Neither is a RAID laboratory. Older 16TB Pro RAID6 labs remain the NE class. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. See the review evidence ↓

Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB NAS hard drive

Is 16TB IronWolf Pro storage right for your NAS?

Shared files and backup targets

CMR recording and the annual workload class suit always-on NAS storage.[1]

Good fit

Large media libraries

16 TB per bay provides substantial raw capacity; usable space depends on redundancy.[1]

Good fit

A NAS beside your desk

Enclosure vibration and seek noise need separate consideration; no room-noise guarantee follows from the specification.[1][2]

Consider placement

Latency-sensitive applications

A 7200 RPM mechanical drive has rotational delay; capacity-focused NAS storage is its main role.[2]

Living with it

16TB copies, one DOA report, and NE-class labs

01

How much usable capacity do 16TB drives provide?

A pair of 16 TB drives in a simple mirror provides roughly 16 TB before formatting and filesystem overhead. Four equal drives with one drive of parity provide roughly 48 TB before overhead. These are capacity calculations, not measurements; snapshots and reserved space reduce what remains.[1]

02

What does the 550TB/year workload rating cover?

The 550 TB/year workload class, RV sensors and RAID-oriented error recovery suit frequent shared storage use. They do not make a single drive redundant or make an unsupported NAS configuration approved.[1]

03

Will this 16TB drive improve NAS transfer speed?

The 270 MB/s outer-track rating describes the drive under manufacturer conditions. Network speed, parity, small files and the NAS processor can all limit transfers. Buy the capacity and workload class you need; do not equate SATA link speed with file-copy speed.[1]

04

How should you plan NAS noise and cooling?

Treat placement and cooling as part of the purchase. A-weighted laboratory acoustics do not predict the vibration of your enclosure or sound at your desk. Leave ventilation clear and check drive temperature during sustained work.[1][2]

05

Why do ST16000NT001 specification revisions differ?

The exact-model datasheet and the later shared manual disagree on cache, some performance figures and operating limits. The tables preserve both contexts. If an exact cache size or thermal/acoustic limit decides your purchase, ask the seller or Seagate to confirm the revision supplied.[1][2]

06

Related 16TB Pro labs are the older NE class

StorageReview measured an 8-drive RAID6 of IronWolf Pro 16TB from the pre-NT generation. TweakTown's 16TB IronWolf/Pro/Exos article is the 2019 launch family. Use those pieces for RAID and 16TB CMR context, not as ST16000NT001 sequential or IOPS numbers. NT001's published advantage is the 550 TB/year / 2.5M-hour class versus the older 300 TB/year / 1.2M-hour class.[7][8][1]

07

Owner videos are not RAID labs — and 281 MB/s is not an average

The Kabum-purchased ST16000NT001-3MC101 completed a Windows copy from NVMe. The on-screen 281 MB/s is Explorer’s instantaneous speed at 17% of that copy. Steve Bentioulis’s 2023 clip is a single undetected/clicking unit; he wrote that multiple SATA/power connections behaved the same, and that Seagate’s 30-day lab/refurb comments were his experience then, not a verified current policy. StorageReview’s 16TB Pro RAID6 article is still the older NE generation.[10][11][7]

GN Engenharia Windows copy

On ST16000NT001-3MC101, a Windows 11 copy from the system NVMe showed 281 MB/s instantaneous at 17% complete (46 items, 33.1 GB remaining). That is not a sustained average. The owner’s 14.5 TB Windows size is the usual decimal/binary reporting, not a measured shortfall.

Unbox HD Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS 16TB ST16000NT001

Tested: Self-purchased at Kabum, arrived 2026-05-27. Windows 11. Fresh format, empty disk. Copy from system NVMe SSD to the Seagate. Device details show ST16000NT001-3MC101.

Applies to: Exact ST16000NT001-3MC101 Windows Explorer copy. The 281 MB/s figure is the instantaneous speed at 17% complete, not a sustained average or elapsed-time throughput.

  • Windows Explorer at 17% showed Velocidade 281 MB/s copying 46 items from Downloads to HD Seagate 16TB IronWolf, 33 items / 33.1 GB remaining, about 2 minutes 30 seconds estimated. That is an instantaneous Explorer reading.Source location: Parent frame 1:49
  • ASR first called the folder 35 GB then 40 GB after completion. Remaining bytes at 17% are consistent with ~40 GB. No reliable average speed can be computed from the available frames.Source location: ASR 1:49–1:57 and 4:38–4:43
  • The owner’s 14.5 TB Windows size comment is the usual TB/TiB reporting difference, not a measured missing 1.5 TB defect.Source location: ASR 1:09–1:16

Steve Bentioulis 2023 non-detection

One self-bought ST16000NT001 was reported as clicking and undetected. The description says the same behavior on multiple SATA and power connections; the Sabrent dock is how the clip was filmed. SeaTools on camera shows only a Samsung SSD. This is one owner story from 2023, not a failure rate.

New Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB (ST16000NT001) Drive beeping and clicking error DOA

Tested: Self-bought Amazon mid-February 2023, titled ST16000NT001. Description: same non-detection on multiple SATA/power connectors; Sabrent DS-UTC1 dock used in the video for simplicity, not as the only tried path. Windows Disk Management and SeaTools on camera list a Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB, not a 16TB Seagate.

Applies to: Single-owner 2023 non-detection/click report of a drive the author identifies as ST16000NT001. Not a failure-rate study and not a current Seagate replacement-policy document.

  • The owner reports the drive was not detected, with beep/click sounds, and that the same behavior occurred on multiple power connectors and SATA cables. The dock is how the video was filmed, not the only connection tried.Source location: Expanded description; ASR 0:24–1:25
  • The paused ~0:32 frame shows SeaTools/Disk Management listing only the Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB. Parent did not listen to the soundtrack to verify clicks.Source location: Parent frame 0:30/0:32
  • Seagate lab/30-day/refurb comments are the owner’s 2023 account, not verified current warranty policy. The owner also says two 4TB IronWolf disks had run five years in FreeNAS and that Rescue previously recovered another enterprise drive — anecdotes, not fleet statistics.Source location: Expanded description

Current and historical ST16000NT001 listings and ownership costs

Dated Newegg OEM listing and older store rows

On 2026-09-11 Newegg’s visible primary price for ST16000NT001 was $579.99 in stock; the H1 also says OEM, so packaging and warranty still need a live check. Older B&H, marketplace and Amazon rows keep their original dates.[9][3]

Budget for the complete array

Multiply the dated per-drive price by the number of drives you need, then allow for backup storage, a replacement plan and any network upgrade. Compare usable capacity after redundancy rather than adding raw TB alone.[1]

Power is an ongoing cost

The datasheet lists 5 W average idle and 7.6 W average operating power per drive. Actual energy depends on workload, sleep settings and background tasks; include the NAS enclosure itself separately.[1][2]

Match the offered model and condition

Check ST16000NT001, 16 TB, one-drive quantity, new condition and the actual seller before paying. A standard retail listing can also display separate used offers or a different default marketplace seller.[1]

IronWolf Pro 16TB questions before buying

Is this exact drive CMR?

Yes. Seagate lists ST16000NT001 as CMR in its model-specific datasheet column.[1]

Does Pro mean it works in any NAS?

No. The drive is designed for NAS use, but controller support, maximum capacity and vendor firmware qualification still matter. Check the exact enclosure and drive model together.[1][2]

Is the workload figure a lifetime write limit?

No. It is an annualized transfer workload that includes reads and writes. It is not an SSD-style lifetime TBW figure.[1][2]

Do the warranty and Rescue service replace a backup?

No. Warranty and recovery services have conditions and do not guarantee recovery. Keep an independent copy of important data.[1][2]

Did an owner measure 281 MB/s as the drive’s average speed?

No. The 281 MB/s figure is Windows Explorer’s instantaneous speed at 17% of one NVMe-to-disk copy of about 40 GB. It is not elapsed-time throughput and not a full-surface test.[10]

Does one clicking NT001 video mean the model is unreliable?

No. It is one 2023 Amazon unit the owner said failed to detect on several cables. That does not establish a failure rate. It is still a reason to test a new drive before trusting it in an array.[11]
