20 TB per bay for a growing shared-storage array

One 20 TB ST20000NT001 drive · 3.5-inch SATA · CMR · 7200 RPM

This guide combines Seagate DS2129.4 with three laboratory ST20000NT001 tests (NASCompares, BenchLife, Hardwareluxx) and one owner Grafana log (zubilitic) of an exact ST20000NT001-3MB101. The owner log is a RAIDZ1 migration and enclosure temperature story, not a CrystalDiskMark peak. StorageReview and Tom's Hardware 20TB Pro articles remain the older NE / 300 TB/year class. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. See the review evidence ↓

Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB NAS hard drive

Is 20TB IronWolf Pro storage right for your NAS?

Shared files and backup targets

CMR recording and the annual workload class suit always-on NAS storage.[1]

Good fit

Large media libraries

20 TB per bay provides substantial raw capacity; usable space depends on redundancy.[1]

Good fit

A NAS beside your desk

Enclosure vibration and seek noise need separate consideration; no room-noise guarantee follows from the specification.[1][2]

Consider placement

Latency-sensitive applications

A 7200 RPM mechanical drive has rotational delay; capacity-focused NAS storage is its main role.[2]

Living with it

NT versus NE performance, copying and measured power

01

How much usable capacity do 20TB drives provide?

A pair of 20 TB drives in a simple mirror provides roughly 20 TB before formatting and filesystem overhead. Four equal drives with one drive of parity provide roughly 60 TB before overhead. These are capacity calculations, not measurements; snapshots and reserved space reduce what remains.[1]

02

What does the 550TB/year workload rating cover?

The 550 TB/year workload class, RV sensors and RAID-oriented error recovery suit frequent shared storage use. They do not make a single drive redundant or make an unsupported NAS configuration approved.[1]

03

What the 20 TB tests actually show

The original tests support useful bulk-transfer performance, but results vary with workload and setup. BenchLife found the older NE revision ahead in some sequential tests, while Hardwareluxx showed similar results across two NT samples. NASCompares adds a mixed-file copy example. The Pro workload rating is a clearer reason to choose this revision than a promise that it wins every benchmark.[3][4][5]

04

Will this 20TB drive improve NAS transfer speed?

The 285 MB/s outer-track rating describes the drive under manufacturer conditions. Network speed, parity, small files and the NAS processor can all limit transfers. Buy the capacity and workload class you need; do not equate SATA link speed with file-copy speed.[1]

05

How should you plan NAS noise and cooling?

Treat placement and cooling as part of the purchase. A-weighted laboratory acoustics do not predict the vibration of your enclosure or sound at your desk. Leave ventilation clear and check drive temperature during sustained work.[1][2]

06

Why do ST20000NT001 specification revisions differ?

The exact-model datasheet and the later shared manual disagree on cache, some performance figures and operating limits. The tables preserve both contexts. If an exact cache size or thermal/acoustic limit decides your purchase, ask the seller or Seagate to confirm the revision supplied.[1][2]

07

NE 20TB Pro labs are a different workload class

StorageReview's RAID6 article and Tom's Hardware's 20TB Pro review describe the 300 TB/year IronWolf Pro, not ST20000NT001. They are useful for array-level 20TB CMR behavior and for seeing why Seagate raised the NT workload rating to 550 TB/year. BenchLife's side-by-side is the article that actually retested NE and NT on the same 2023 platform: NT did not win every sequential test.[11][12][4][1]

08

An owner log of heat, not a max-speed bench

zubilitic bought ST20000NT001 in early June and published Grafana for that serial. In a USB Thermaltake Silver River 3 the drive ran about 45–51 °C; after moving to an Icy Box IB-3805-C31 with extra airflow it hovered near 41 °C. Ambient was not controlled. The 163 MB/s Grafana write peak is the RAIDZ1-to-single-disk copy with compression and parity, not the 285 MB/s datasheet OD figure. Do not treat a separate 265.28 MB/s ASMT 2135 / Apple M1 overlay as the same test.[14][1]

Limits to keep in mind

  • No full RAID-array performance test claimed in the single-drive methods. Noise examples discuss multiple drives and are not treated as controlled exact-array benchmarks.
  • Historical compatibility observations are not current vendor approval. Firmware and sample-supply disclosure were not confirmed.
  • Amazon/B&H affiliate links disclosed. Short CDM runs and mixed-file copy observations do not establish sustained full-surface performance.

zubilitic ST20000NT001 heat and migration

A self-bought ST20000NT001-3MB101 ran about 45–51 °C in a USB Thermaltake single bay (Grafana tooltip 51 °C) and around 41 °C after moving into an Icy Box with a rear fan. A RAIDZ1 copy from four 4TB disks onto this 20TB disk peaked at 163 MB/s write in Grafana; that path includes compression and parity, so it is not a maximum sequential rating. A 265 MB/s Mac overlay on the same frame is a different, unidentified path.

Current and historical ST20000NT001 listings and ownership costs

Dated Newegg marketplace and Newegg-sold rows

The visible Newegg primary pane on the saved 2026-09-11 page is E.O.L. Tech Inc. at $825.10 in stock (new). A separate Newegg-sold alternative is $669.99 out of stock. Older B&H/Adorama/Amazon rows keep their original dates.[10][13]

Budget for the complete array

Multiply the dated per-drive price by the number of drives you need, then allow for backup storage, a replacement plan and any network upgrade. Compare usable capacity after redundancy rather than adding raw TB alone.[1]

Power is an ongoing cost

The datasheet lists 5.7 W average idle and 7.7 W average operating power per drive. Actual energy depends on workload, sleep settings and background tasks; include the NAS enclosure itself separately.[1][2]

Match the offered model and condition

Check ST20000NT001, 20 TB, one-drive quantity, new condition and the actual seller before paying. A standard retail listing can also display separate used offers or a different default marketplace seller.[1]

IronWolf Pro 20TB questions before buying

Is this exact drive CMR?

Yes. Seagate lists ST20000NT001 as CMR in its model-specific datasheet column.[1]

Does Pro mean it works in any NAS?

No. The drive is designed for NAS use, but controller support, maximum capacity and vendor firmware qualification still matter. Check the exact enclosure and drive model together.[1][2]

Is the workload figure a lifetime write limit?

No. It is an annualized transfer workload that includes reads and writes. It is not an SSD-style lifetime TBW figure.[1][2]

Do the warranty and Rescue service replace a backup?

No. Warranty and recovery services have conditions and do not guarantee recovery. Keep an independent copy of important data.[1][2]

Is 163 MB/s the speed this 20TB drive can sustain?

No. In zubilitic's Grafana it is the peak write while copying off a four-disk RAIDZ1 with compression and parity. Laboratory sequential figures on empty NT001 samples are a different method.[14][4]
