Identity & capacity

Exact model and raw capacity

Identity & capacity specifications
Exact modelST32000NT000[1]
Capacity32 TB[1]

Decimal capacity; formatting and RAID reduce usable space.

Form factor3.5-inch[1]
Sector format512e: 512-byte logical / 4096-byte physical[2]

Default sector layout.

Guaranteed sectors62,501,421,056[2]

32TB row, formatted-capacity table.

RecordingCMR with HAMR[2][14]

Seagate’s CMR/SMR list places IronWolf Pro 28/30/32TB in Mozaic HAMR CMR: heat-assisted writing with conventional (non-SMR) tracks. DS2129.7 still prints CMR in the recording-technology row. Those are layers of the same class, not opposing specs.

Drive constructionHelium; 10 disks / 20 heads[2]

Head and disk count from the exact-model manual.

Interface & performance

Connection and transfer limits

Interface & performance specifications
InterfaceSATA 6 Gb/s[1]

Negotiates 6.0 / 3.0 / 1.5 Gb/s.

Spindle speed7200 RPM[1]
Cache512 MB[1]
Maximum sustained transfer rate285 MB/s[1]

Manufacturer outer-diameter maximum; not a full-disk or NAS-network average.

Average rotational latency4.16 ms[2]
Power-on / standby to ready30 s typical / 60 s maximum[2]

Both transitions, manual table 2.

Command featuresNCQ; SATA hot-plug support[2]

Host and enclosure must also support hot-plug.

NAS use & service

Workload, monitoring and service

NAS use & service specifications
Supported drive baysUnlimited[1]

Manufacturer bay-count rating, not universal enclosure approval.

Workload rating550 TB/year[1]

Annualized transferred-data rating; not backup capacity or a lifespan guarantee.

Duty rating8760 power-on hours/year[1]

Designed for continuous operation.

Rotational-vibration sensorsYes[1]
NAS firmware featuresAgileArray; time-limited error recovery; dual-plane balancing[1]
Health monitoringIronWolf Health Management[1]

Availability depends on the NAS platform.

MTBF2,500,000 hours[1][2]

Population reliability rating under specified conditions; not one drive’s expected life. Manual section2.9 assumes8760 power-on hours/year,10–30°C drive-reported temperature, wet-bulb ambient≤26°C and specified workload/contamination limits; maximum operating temperature is not the MTBF rating condition.

Nonrecoverable read error rating1 sector per 10^15 bits read[2]

Manual notation used to avoid the datasheet’s ambiguous 10E15 typography.

Load/unload cycles600,000[2]
Limited warranty5 years[1]

Confirm the purchased serial number and region.

Rescue recovery service3 years[1]

Not available in every country; recovery is not guaranteed and does not replace backup.

Power & acoustics

Running costs and sound ratings

Power & acoustics specifications
Average idle power6.8 W[1]

Manufacturer rating.

Average operating power8.3 W[1]

Manufacturer rating; workload and enclosure affect consumption.

Standby / sleep power1.2 W / 1.2 W[1]

Typical.

Startup current2.0 A on 12 V[1]

Typical; include simultaneous disk spin-up in the enclosure power budget.

Power supply+12 V and +5 V[2]

Manual voltage tolerance: 12 V ±10%, 5 V ±5%.

Idle / seek acoustics28 dBA / 32 dBA[1][2]

Datasheet typical values; idle measured in Idle 1 state. The manual identifies A-weighted sound power, not sound pressure at a specified listening distance. These are not an enclosure sound-level test.

Environment & handling

Temperature, shock and vibration limits

Environment & handling specifications
Operating temperature10°C minimum ambient; 60°C maximum drive-reported[1]

Maintain airflow and monitor the installed drive.

Nonoperating temperature−40°C to 70°C[1]

Ambient.

Relative humidity5–95%, noncondensing[2]

Operating and nonoperating; maximum change 20% per hour.

Temperature gradient20°C/hour maximum[2]

Operating and nonoperating.

Operating / nonoperating altitude−304.8 to 3048 m / −304.8 to 12,192 m[2]

Helium HAMR platform, CMR recording[1][2]
  • Noise in a real NAS: No controlled exact-model enclosure-noise test was adopted. Do not infer a quiet multi-drive NAS from the manufacturer’s drive rating.
  • Long-term reliability: The selected tests are not a multi-year failure study. MTBF and warranty do not establish the lifetime of an individual drive.
  • Manufacturer table differences: Manual summary and detailed recording-density tables disagree; density figures are omitted. Vibration frequency ranges and weight qualifiers are retained with their source conditions.
  • Current US offer coverage: On 2026-09-11 DiscTech listed ST32000NT000 new at $1,379 in stock. The same day’s Newegg pane showed TechnoDealsUSA at $1,699 in stock as the visible primary, and a separate Newegg-sold alternative at $1,159.99 out of stock. Older Amazon/B&H/Adorama rows keep their 2026-09-08 times. Confirm seller, new condition and shipping at purchase.
