More storage per bay, with cooling to plan for

One 32TB ST32000NT000 · 3.5-inch SATA · CMR / HAMR

This guide combines Seagate DS2129.7 and Seagate’s CMR/SMR classification with original ST32000NT000 tests from ComputerBase and StorageReview. 32TB IronWolf Pro is Mozaic HAMR CMR: HAMR is the write method, CMR is the track layout, not SMR. Long writes still needed extra airflow in ComputerBase’s lab. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. See the review evidence ↓

Is 32TB IronWolf Pro storage right for your NAS?

A NAS running out of drive bays

32TB raw capacity in one bay, if the exact model is supported.[1]

A strong reason to consider it

Large backup and shared-file storage

Full-drive writing benefited from direct airflow.[3]

Consider with active cooling

Busy VMs and databases

Small random I/O is a different strength from sequential transfers.[4]

Keep performance expectations modest

A quiet desk-side NAS

Manufacturer drive ratings do not describe your finished enclosure.[1]

Acoustic comfort is unproven

Living with it

32TB migration speed and active cooling

01

More storage when the drive bays are already spoken for

A 32TB drive puts more data in each bay. It makes sense when replacing the enclosure would be difficult, but check the exact model against the NAS compatibility list before ordering. RAID and formatting leave less usable space than the capacity printed on the label.[1][2]

02

Plan cooling before a large migration

ComputerBase’s full-drive write improved from 201.1 MB/s to 218.5 MB/s with a fan in front of the drive, and the collapse below 100 MB/s after ~22 TB went away. A milder lasting write slowdown still appeared and was not explained by temperature, so extra airflow is necessary planning, not a promise that write speed stays flat. Startup stayed under 25 W; average CDM power was 7.6 W.[3]

03

Use it for files, not SSD-like responsiveness

The direct tests support large-file storage. Small random requests remain a different workload, so do not expect the responsiveness of an SSD for virtual machines or busy databases.[4]

04

Keep the backup separate

The workload rating, warranty and recovery service serve different purposes. None creates another copy of your files. Budget for an independent backup before consolidating important data onto larger drives.[1][2]

ComputerBase

ComputerBase 32TB lab

A manufacturer-loaned ST32000NT000 averaged 201.1 MB/s on a full-surface write and 218.5 MB/s with a fan in front of the drive. The severe drop after ~22 TB went away with that fan, but a milder lasting write dip remained and is not a temperature story. CrystalDiskMark 8 SEQ1M was 294.1/286.7 MB/s at Q8T1 and 292.5/290.9 MB/s at Q1T1. Access times were 11.9 ms read and 7.3 ms write. Average CDM power was 7.6 W; startup stayed below 25 W.

Seagate IronWolf Pro 32 TB im Test: Die derzeit größte HDD für NAS-Systeme

Tested: ST32000NT000; full-drive write test, repeated with a fan directly in front of the drive. Firmware and full host configuration not stated.

Applies to: Exact 32TB model; long writes rather than NAS-network throughput.

  • Uncooled full-surface writes fell below 100 MB/s after about 22 TB. A fan directly in front of the drive removed that major drop (average 201.1 MB/s uncooled, 218.5 MB/s cooled) but a lasting milder write slowdown remained and was not explained by temperature. Do not promise the collapse disappears completely with extra airflow.Source location: Schreibleistung mit Auffälligkeit / Geschwindigkeit Schreiben – Durchschnitt

FIO sequential 284/283 MB/s used a 10 GB footprint, not a full-surface pass. BlackMagic was 253.4/228.3 MB/s and PCMark 10 Data Drive 609. Optional extras: LLM 10-run mean load times 48.7773 / 73.2398 / 73.8927 s and 3DMark Storage 175. Capacity and NAS features are the buying point, not winning these desktop synthetics.

Current and historical ST32000NT000 listings and ownership costs

Dated DiscTech, Newegg marketplace and Newegg-sold rows

On 2026-09-11 DiscTech listed ST32000NT000 new at $1,379 in stock. The same day’s Newegg pane showed TechnoDealsUSA at $1,699 in stock as the visible primary, and a separate Newegg-sold alternative at $1,159.99 out of stock. Older Amazon/B&H/Adorama rows keep their 2026-09-08 times.[10][12][11]

Count capacity after redundancy

Choose the array layout first, then compare the required number of drives. A 32TB label is raw decimal capacity, not the final usable capacity of a protected array.[1]

Allow for cooling and spin-up power

Check the enclosure’s power and thermal limits when several disks start together. Active airflow matters during long writes.[2][3]

IronWolf Pro 32TB questions before buying

Is HAMR the same as SMR?

No. This exact model uses HAMR to assist writing and is specified as CMR. It should not be confused with an SMR model.[1][2]

Will it work in any NAS with SATA bays?

SATA and physical fit are only part of the check. Confirm the exact drive model, 32TB capacity and firmware support with your NAS vendor. The unlimited-bay rating is not universal compatibility approval.[1][2]

Will every transfer reach 285 MB/s?

That is the manufacturer’s maximum at the outer diameter. Network speed, disk position, workload, cooling and the array change actual transfer rates.[1][3][4]

Is it a good drive next to a quiet desk?

We have no controlled enclosure-noise result for this exact drive. The manufacturer gives idle and seek ratings, but the case, mounts, fans and number of drives change what you hear.[1]

Does the warranty protect the files?

The five-year limited warranty and three-year Rescue service do not replace an independent backup. Service availability and warranty eligibility depend on the purchased drive and region.[1]

Will a fan make 32TB writes stay at the CrystalDiskMark rate?

No. CrystalDiskMark 8 reached about 294/287 MB/s on short sequential tests. Full-surface writes averaged 201.1 MB/s, or 218.5 MB/s with a fan, and a milder lasting dip remained even when cooled.[3]
