IronWolf 4TB: specifications and dated store comparison →

A modest-capacity drive for household backups and shared files, with room to grow only if 4TB is enough.

One 4TB Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN006 internal SATA hard drive. NAS enclosure sold separately.

This guide combines Seagate DS1904.23 for ST4000VN006 with a TechRadar PC comparison against WD Red Plus 4TB and a Hardwareluxx reader rebuild on a QNAP TS-473A. The drive is 5400 rpm CMR and only 20.20 mm tall. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. See the review evidence ↓

Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS hard drive

Is 4TB IronWolf storage right for your NAS?

Home backups

A practical starting point when your files and expected growth fit comfortably within 4TB.[1][2]

Good for a smaller library

Shared photos and documents

The direct PC test supports straightforward file transfers; a separate QNAP test also exercised a mirrored pair.[2][6]

Good for everyday file storage

A fast-growing media library

A 4TB drive uses one enclosure slot just like a larger drive. Starting small can mean replacing it sooner.[1]

Consider more capacity

A NAS beside your desk

TechRadar found the WD Red Plus comparison drive quieter. There was no controlled sound-level test.[2]

Living with it

Household backups, 5400 rpm and desktop noise

01

When is 4TB enough for household backups?

Choose 4TB when it covers your existing files plus realistic growth. If you already expect to exceed it, compare larger drives before filling your enclosure: the smaller drive saves capacity you pay for today, but may require an earlier replacement.[1]

02

Good file-copy speed does not settle every comparison

TechRadar’s PC test placed this IronWolf near the WD Red Plus in sequential transfers, while some latency results favored WD. That makes the IronWolf a reasonable file-storage choice, without establishing that it is faster for every task.[2]

03

What did the separate USB-connected test show?

The Hardwareluxx reader measured 215.60 MB/s read and 216.27 MB/s write in CrystalDiskMark 9 sequential Q8T1, using three 1 GiB passes on an empty drive through a SATA-to-USB 3.0 adapter. This was separate from the QNAP mirrored-array recovery exercise, which did not report a rebuild duration.[6]

04

Low rated power is useful; silence is not promised

Seagate specifies 3.7W during operation and 3.2W at idle. Those figures describe the drive, not a complete NAS. Do not assume the 5400 rpm label guarantees a quiet desk setup: enclosure vibration and the reviewer’s unfavorable noise comparison still matter.[1][2]

05

The 4TB IronWolf is specified at 20.20 mm height

DS1904.23 lists ST4000VN006 at 20.20 mm height and 490 g, versus 26.11 mm typical height on the 8TB-and-up helium IronWolf columns in the same sheet. That is a published mechanical difference. No compatibility source was adopted that names specific NAS trays this drive does or does not fit, so tray fit remains something to check on the enclosure you own.[1][2][6]

Close sequential results, with caveats

In a single-drive PC comparison, AJA reported 190 MB/s read and 185 MB/s write. The author regarded small sequential differences as inconclusive and preferred WD for noise. Full PC settings were not disclosed.

A practical mirrored-drive recovery exercise

A Hardwareluxx reader used two SC60 units in a QNAP TS-473A, removed one from the running mirror and restored the volume after reinserting the reformatted drive. The supplied-hardware test gives no rebuild duration or universal compatibility guarantee. Separate original single-drive USB-adapter screenshots show CDM9 sequential215.60/216.27MB/s with three1GiB passes; this is a different path from the NAS recovery exercise.

Current and historical ST4000VN006 listings and ownership costs

Dated Newegg-sold listing and older store rows

On 2026-09-11, the primary Newegg-sold listing showed $189.99 for one new ST4000VN006 in stock. Older B&H and Amazon offers retain their original observation dates; compare availability and delivered cost before ordering.[8]

Budget for growth as well as today’s drive

Compare the total cost of the capacity you expect to keep using. A cheaper initial drive can become an extra purchase if your library outgrows 4TB.[1]

A drive is only part of the purchase

These listings are for one internal hard drive. Check whether you also need an enclosure, additional drives for your chosen storage layout, and the required mounting hardware.[3][1]

Compare the delivered offer

Check seller, shipping, tax and quantity limits before ordering. A displayed single-drive offer may not be available in the quantity needed for a mirrored pair.[4][3]

IronWolf 4TB questions before buying

Is 4TB the space I can use for files?

Not exactly. The label uses decimal capacity, and formatting reduces available space. Your redundancy layout can reduce it further; two mirrored drives do not double usable capacity.[1][6]

Is this the same as every IronWolf 4TB?

No. Match ST4000VN006 on the listing and the delivered drive. This page covers the 5400 rpm, 256MB-cache model; another suffix is not automatically the same hardware.[1]

Should I choose this for the quietest NAS?

Quietness is not established. TechRadar preferred the WD comparison drive’s noise, and the available test does not provide controlled sound-pressure measurements.[2]
