Capacity, connection & physical fit

Check the drive format and usable capacity before ordering.

Capacity, connection & physical fit specifications
Capacity8TB decimal[1]
Form factor / interface3.5-inch / SATA 6Gb/s[1]
Recording / enclosure fillCMR / Air[1]
Height × width × depth26.11 × 101.85 × 146.99 mm[1]
Typical mass720g[1]
Sector format512-byte logical / 4096-byte physical[3]

Manual Rev. F; 512e.

Heads / discs10 heads / 5 discs[3]

Transfer speed & response

Rated transfer speed describes a particular operation, not every file copy.

Transfer speed & response specifications
Spindle / cache7200 rpm / 256MB[1]
Rated outer-track sustained transfer210 MB/s[1]
Power-on / standby to ready23s typical; 30s maximum[3]

Manual Rev. F, start/stop table.

Transfer definition200 MiB/s (210 MB/s)[3]

Manual Rev. F; not SATA interface bandwidth or a full-disk benchmark.

Average latency4.16 ms[3]

NAS use, workload & warranty

Match your enclosure and workload; reliability ratings are not a lifespan guarantee.

NAS use, workload & warranty specifications
Rated bay range1–8[1]
Vibration and error controlRV sensor; dual-plane balance; error recovery control[1]
Annual workload / powered operation180TB/year / 8760 hours/year[1]
MTBF / load-unload rating1 million hours / 600,000 cycles[1]

Population/design rating; not a measured lifespan for an individual drive.

Unrecoverable read error rating1 per 10^15 bits read[1]
Limited warranty / Rescue service3 years / 3 years; Rescue availability varies by country[1]
Annualized failure rate statement0.87% based on 8760 POH (manual)[3]

Population statistic under stated conditions, not a life guarantee.

Power & startup requirements

Allow for both continuous operation and the power needed to spin up.

Power & startup requirements specifications
Startup current (typical, 12V)1.8A[1]
Average operating10.1W[1]
Average idle7.8W[1]
Typical standby / sleep1.0W[1]
Voltage tolerance including noise5V ±5%; 12V ±10%[1]
Manual Table 2 average idle at 25°C7.16 W (0.233 A @ 5 V + 0.503 A @ 12 V)[3]

Not merged with the 7.8 W datasheet idle or 10.1 W average operating rows.

Cooling & handling limits

Keep the drive within its temperature and environmental limits.

Cooling & handling limits specifications
Operating temperature0°C minimum ambient; 65°C maximum drive-reported[1]

Seagate advises against sustained drive temperatures above 60°C.

Storage temperature−40 to 70°C ambient[1]
Shock, operating / nonoperating (2ms)70G / 300G[1]
Humidity / altitude5–95% non-condensing; operating −304.8 to 3048m[3]

Manual Rev. F; maximum humidity gradient 20% per hour.

Manual operating shock: read / write70 G read / 40 G write, 2 ms[3]

Rev. F §2.7.1 distinguishes read and write; datasheet combined 70 G label above is less specific.

Operating vibration5–22 Hz: 0.25 G; 22–350 Hz: 0.50 G; 350–500 Hz: 0.25 G[3]

Rev. F Table 1; lower band displacement-limited, at drive mounting points.

Rotational / non-operating vibration20–1500 Hz: 12.5 rad/s² operating; 10–500 Hz: 5.0 Grms non-operating[3]

Rev. F Table 1. Distinct vibration modes, not directly interchangeable.

Temperature gradient / wet-bulb limit20°C/hour operating and non-operating; 29°C maximum wet bulb[3]

Rev. F Table 1 and §2.6.2; non-condensing.

Non-operating altitude−304.8 to 12,192 m[3]

Rev. F §2.6.3; separate from operating maximum 3048 m.

Manual maximum mass716 g[3]

Rev. F Table 1 says maximum 716 g; DS1904.23 lists typical 720 g. Source-version inconsistency retained; neither value is a measured sample weight.

Sound ratings & measurement conditions

Manufacturer sound ratings do not tell you how loud your assembled NAS will be.

Sound ratings & measurement conditions specifications
Typical idle / seek (datasheet dBA)28 / 32[1]

Manufacturer rating, not an installed NAS sound-pressure measurement; idle uses Idle 1 state.

Typical / maximum sound powerIdle 2.8 / 3.0 bel; seek 3.2 / 3.4 bel[3]

Rev. F Table 1 and §2.8: A-weighted ISO 7779 sound power, free field over reflecting plane. Do not read this as a sound-pressure level at a listener.

Exact product identity & open questions

Manufacturer part number
ST8000VN004[1]
Product
One 8TB internal 3.5-inch SATA HDD; standard IronWolf, not IronWolf Pro or a NAS bundle.[1][4]
Revision to check
ST8000VN004 is 7200 rpm; ST8000VN002 is a separate 5400 rpm model. Newegg URL contains an NE- merchant prefix.[1][2]
  • Long-term reliability: No controlled exact-MPN field failure-rate study is adopted. Warranty and MTBF/AFR do not establish the lifespan of the unit you receive.
  • Physical revision and NAS compatibility: Merchant pages do not guarantee a complete dash suffix or firmware. IHM/HCL still need a host-specific check. Newegg uses an NE- listing prefix.
  • Power definitions: Rev. F manual Table 2 has 7.16 W average idle at 25°C versus 7.8 W average idle in DS1904.23. These are not merged into a tested wattage.
  • Current US offer coverage: Newegg selected primary new offer was $329.99 on September 11. Other merchant observations retain their original dates. QNAP stock and pre-order wording still conflict.
  • Video: Wong video ASR/frames integrated without dBA. A1lF6okQ-No has no ASR; 5:10 frame is unreadable; owner 277 MB/s and 4-platter claim are not adopted over the official 10 heads / 5 discs.
