An 8TB option for large backup and media files, with a noticeable power tradeoff for always-on use.

One 8TB Seagate IronWolf ST8000VN004 internal SATA hard drive. NAS enclosure sold separately.

This guide checks ST8000VN004 official tables, iXBT’s PC lab, TechRadar’s article and an original desktop-copy video. Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS hard drive

Is 8TB IronWolf storage right for your NAS?

Large backups

The exact-model PC test averaged about 206 MB/s in full-disk reading and writing. Network and enclosure limits still apply.[2]

Good for sequential storage

A larger media collection

It doubles nominal capacity over a 4TB drive in the same slot, without requiring you to buy 12TB immediately.[1]

Good when 8TB covers your growth

Applications with frequent small accesses

Mixed and small-block access were much weaker than simple sequential transfers in the test.[2]

A limited fit

Low-power continuous operation

The separate ST8000VN002 has lower official operating and idle power figures. Check the full model number.[1]

Living with it

Full-disk transfers and the VN004 power tradeoff

01

Judge long copies by more than the peak

iXBT measured this drive across its full capacity. Read speed ranged from 111.1 to 257.7 MB/s, averaging 206.1 MB/s. That spread matters when copying a large library: one fast benchmark result does not describe the entire disk.[2]

02

Reading and writing together is a different task

The same PC test reported 83.9 MB/s for its mixed Q1T1 workload. If your priority is busy applications or frequent small accesses, the 7200 rpm specification alone is not a reason to choose this drive.[2]

03

ST8000VN004 versus VN002: how does power use differ?

ST8000VN004 is the 7200 rpm model. Seagate’s current sheet gives it 10.1W operating and 7.8W idle, versus 5.3W and 4.0W for the separate 5400 rpm ST8000VN002. Compare those choices if your drives will run continuously; actual electricity use depends on workload and power management.[1]

Strong sequential storage, much weaker mixed access

iXBT tested ST8000VN004 on an i9-11900K/Z590 PC. HD Tune averaged 206.1 MB/s read and 206.3 MB/s write across the disk, with minima near 111/125 MB/s. CDM mixed Q1T1 was 83.9 MB/s. 32 GB copies fell from about 265 MB/s on the first 300 GB to about 138 MB/s on the last 300 GB. These are the 8TB rows, not the article’s IronWolf Pro 18TB results.

A photographed 7200 rpm 8TB; power numbers need the datasheet

TechRadar (Mark Pickavance, 2026-05-27) photographed ST8000VN004. It publishes no lab suite. Its 7.8 vs 3.4 W ‘operating’ contrast is a mislabel/older pairing; current DS1904.23 is 10.1 W operating / 7.8 W idle versus ST8000VN002 at 5.3 / 4.0 W. RAID arithmetic and then-current Amazon prices are not reused as live offers.

Seagate IronWolf 8TB review: still selling, none of the reasons are its price

Tested: Author-photographed ST8000VN004 sample; article is design, power-spec comparison and 2026 street-price analysis rather than a published benchmark suite.

Applies to: Exact MPN qualitative review with author photographs. Power comparison in the article mislabels 7.8 W versus 3.4 W as operating; current DS1904.23 is 10.1 W average operating / 7.8 W idle for VN004 versus 5.3 / 4.0 W for ST8000VN002. Do not use the article’s six-bay RAID5+hot-spare 24TB arithmetic or treat its Amazon prices as current offers.

  • The reviewer treats ST8000VN004 as the 2019 7200 rpm follow-on to ST8000VN0022, and ST8000VN002 as a later 5400 rpm model.Source location: Design section
  • The article’s 7.8 W vs 3.4 W ‘operating’ contrast does not match the current datasheet (10.1/7.8 W vs VN002 5.3/4.0 W). Buyer power advice uses the verified datasheet, not that pair.Source location: Design section power sentences versus DS1904.23

Limits to keep in mind

  • No CrystalDiskMark/HD Tune tables.
  • In-article Amazon link is B084ZV4DXB (ST8000VNZ04/N004 retail pack), not the OEM VN004 buy box.
  • Affiliate (GeoRiot) links present.
  • Six-bay RAID5+hot-spare capacity math is incorrect and is not adopted.
  • 2026 street-price tables are not current ChooseCompute offers.

A desktop copy sat near 144–145 MB/s in two snapshots

The Wong Reviewer copied thousands of files from a Barracuda onto a labeled ST8000VN004 (SC60, DOM 13 Aug 2020). Windows showed 144 MB/s near the start and 145 MB/s at 75%. Those are snapshots, not a full-disk average. The phone 50.8 reading is not a calibrated dBA figure.

Tested: Self-bought ST8000VN004, label FW SC60, PN 2M2101-500, DOM 13 Aug 2020. Windows copy of 9368 items from a Barracuda (F:) to Ironwolf8TB (J:) via an HDD duplicator dock. ASR 0:12–11:07 auto captions; selected frames 3:00/9:42/10:10/10:28. No original audio listening.

Applies to: Exact MPN first-hand desktop copy snapshots. Not a NAS array. Phone-app 50.8 overlay is not a calibrated dBA result.

  • At about 1% of the copy, Windows showed 144 MB/s with 3.09 TB remaining; at about 75%, 145 MB/s. ASR also says roughly 142–150 MB/s. Do not average those snapshots into a single throughput.Source location: Frames 9:42 and 10:10; ASR ~9:42
  • After a long copy the reviewer said the drive was too hot to touch; no thermometer.Source location: ASR 10:30–10:58

Current and historical ST8000VN004 listings and ownership costs

September 11 price observations need seller and delivery checks

Newegg sold the exact new drive for $329.99 in the September 11 observation. Recheck delivered total and stock before ordering. QNAP displayed $349 with inconsistent stock and pre-order wording; B&H and Adorama prices remain historical.[7][8][4]

Compare 8TB with the space you will soon need

If 8TB leaves little growth room, compare a larger drive’s total price before using another slot or planning a replacement. Extra capacity is valuable only if you expect to use it.[1]

Include ongoing power use

For an always-on installation, the difference between the two 8TB models can matter beyond the purchase price. Published watts help frame that comparison but are not a measurement of your complete NAS.[1]

Check OEM packaging and warranty

B&H labels this listing OEM and includes a three-year manufacturer warranty. Confirm what is included and verify the individual drive’s warranty using its serial number and purchase country.[4][3]

IronWolf 8TB questions before buying

Are all IronWolf 8TB drives 7200 rpm?

No. ST8000VN004 is 7200 rpm, while ST8000VN002 is a separate 5400 rpm model with different power ratings. Check the exact MPN before comparing prices.[1]

Why are some test peaks above the rated 210 MB/s?

The official rating and the independent benchmark describe different conditions. The test also shows lower speeds elsewhere on the disk, so a peak should not replace the manufacturer rating or become a guaranteed copy speed.[1][3][2]

Does OEM mean the drive is used?

Not by itself. B&H’s regular new-product listing calls this drive OEM and includes manufacturer warranty coverage. Check the actual seller, condition and individual serial-number coverage.[4][3]
