A 16TB CMR Plus-series drive for a listed Synology NAS; confirm the HCL row, DSM build, and backup plan.
One 16TB HAT3310-16T · 3.5-inch SATA · CMR
This page combines Synology's current Plus Series datasheet and product table, the 2026-09-11 compatibility-list rows, and dated US listings. We have not tested HAT3310-16T ourselves. No original lab benchmark of this exact 16TB SKU was adopted. One Kakaku user report describes four of these drives in a stock DS923+ RAID 5 array; that is a single configuration, not a noise ranking. See evidence and test gaps ↓

Living with it
Synology compatibility, capacity and everyday use
01
Confirm HAT3310-16T on your NAS and DSM build
This is the 16TB HAT3310-16T, not HAT3320-16T and not Enterprise HAT5310-16T. On 2026-09-11 the Synology HCL listed it as published/recommended for DS923+, DS224+, DS1522+ and DS1825+ internal trays, with a note to upgrade DSM to 7.2-64570 or later before installing. Recheck your exact NAS; listings can change.[8][2][1]
02
Plan usable space from 16TB raw capacity
16TB is decimal raw capacity. Formatting and RAID/SHR reduce what you keep. A Kakaku user reported 41.9TB on four of these drives in RAID 5 on a stock DS923+; that figure is their array, not a promise for your layout. Keep an independent copy of important files.[1][11]
03
Workload, speed and firmware package
Synology rates 24/7 use and 180 TB/year of host reads/writes/verifies, with a typical maximum sustained transfer of 281 MB/s. HCL lists firmware package MG09_MN09_SATA_1402.ftd. That name hints at Toshiba MG/MN lines but is not a license to reuse N300 charts. HAT3310-12T CGM CrystalDiskMark (iSCSI from a DS224+, SEQ1M Q8T1 118.41/117.97 MB/s) and an in-progress File Station copy (241.9 MB/s at 9.4 GB of 10.02 TB) stay 12TB NAS-path results. Hardwareluxx 4TB 5400 rpm power (startup 23.92 W / idle 1.9 W) is a different SKU.[1][8][12][13][14]
04
Noise is still not a lab result
Datasheet idle/seek figures are manufacturer typical dB without distance or weighting. 38Elm's 2025-02-03 Kakaku report (DS923+, 4× HAT3310-16T, RAID 5, Ubuntu NFS) said idle was fine among quiet PCs, while writes stayed noisy for a while. That is one room and one array, not a dBA ranking.[1][11]
What still needs a real-world test
We have verified the specifications, but have not found an original test that we can reliably apply to this exact model. The advice above follows the documented features; performance, noise and long-term reliability are not independently established here.

Budget for the complete storage plan
Include the number of disks needed for redundancy and a separate backup destination, not just the first drive.[1]
Check seller, warranty country and thermal policy
Synology limited warranty starts on the receipt date, follows the purchase country, and can end if the drive exceeds its published operating temperature. It does not restore files.[9][1]
Include running costs
Typical drive power is 4.14 W active idle and 7.48 W at the specified 4KB Q1 random workload. Add the enclosure and other drives.[2][1]

Compatibility, capacity and backup questions
Does it work with every Synology NAS?
No. Check HAT3310-16T on the HCL for your exact NAS. Sampled Plus models listed it on 2026-09-11 with a DSM 7.2-64570 note. HAT3320-16T is a different HCL row.[8][2]
Is this an SMR drive?
No. Synology specifies conventional magnetic recording (CMR) for the Plus Series, including HAT3310-16T.[1][2]
Can I use the 281 MB/s rating as a file-transfer estimate?
Use it as a manufacturer typical maximum. Network, RAID/SHR, file size and disk position change what you see.[1]
Does the three-year warranty protect my files?
The limited warranty covers eligible hardware service from the receipt date in the purchase country. It is not a backup. Logged over-temperature can end drive coverage.[9][1]
Are the Kakaku comments a substitute for a lab test?
No. They are individual user reports. The detailed RAID 5 note is useful for idle-versus-write noise in that DS923+ setup only.[11]
