This guide is for the exact WD142KFGX. Official ratings come from a reread of the January 2025 WD Red Pro data sheet column plus the current US product page. No exact-MPN original performance test was adopted. Related same-capacity reviews are identified below and are not copied as this SKU's speed. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. Is 14TB WD Red Pro storage right for your NAS?
A 14TB-per-bay capacity plan
One drive provides 14TB decimal before formatting; redundancy, snapshots and backup still consume headroom.[1][9]
Multi-bay commercial NAS
Current official pages claim RAID-optimized NAS at any / unlimited bay count. That is not a host HCL entry and does not override branded-drive policies.[1][9]
Quiet storage beside a desk
Published idle/seek is 20 / 36 dBA. Installed resonance is still enclosure-specific.[1]

Capacity, power, cooling and sound for WD142KFGX
Official column vs the product-page chip
The January 2025 table for WD142KFGX: CMR / Helium, OptiNAND No, 265 MB/s, 20 / 36 dBA, 6.4W / 3.6W, 0 to 65°C, 2,500,000 hours, 550 TB/year, 5-year limited warranty, origin TH. US product pages currently say unlimited / any bay count and mention NASware plus TLER.[1][9]
Why there is no exact-MPN speed card
ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. The recorded searches found original tests of a different same-capacity model; those results are kept separate below. Do not copy numbers from WD141KFGX: Same-capacity SKU WD141KFGX: 255 MB/s, URE <1 in 10^14, different shock/power. TechRadar and APH measured WD141KFGX, not WD142KFGX.[1][9]
What related-model reviews can tell you
TechRadar and APH both tested WD141KFGX. APH (Jonathan Kwan, 20 Mar 2020) had an HGST San Jose sample labelled 5 Oct 2019, Thailand, NASware 3.0, 1.52 lb. PCMark 7 overall 2685 vs IronWolf Pro 14TB above 3000. On ASUSTOR AS3202T Gigabit Ethernet, ATTO read/write tied at the 1 GbE ceiling. 2020 articles still used 300 TB/year. WD142KFGX is the current 265 MB/s / 10^15 URE column — do not copy WD141 numbers as this SKU's speed.[1][9][10][11]
What still needs a real-world test
We have verified the specifications, but have not found an original test that we can reliably apply to this exact model. The advice above follows the documented features; performance, noise and long-term reliability are not independently established here.

WD142KFGX questions before buying
Is WD142KFGX the same as every WD Red Pro 14TB?
No. This page is only WD142KFGX. The January 2025 table also lists WD141KFGX at the same capacity with different ratings.[1][9]
Will one WD142KFGX deliver 265 MB/s?
265 MB/s is the official internal transfer rating for this column (footnote: up to stated read speed; host, capacity and workload change results). NAS copies are usually limited by RAID, clients and Ethernet.[1]
Does unlimited bays mean any NAS will accept it?
No. It is Western Digital's current family compatibility claim. Confirm the NAS vendor list, DSM/QTS policy, bay firmware and warranty rules for the exact enclosure.[1][9]
Do MTBF, 550 TB/year or five years tell me this unit will last?
No. Footnote 5–7 on the data sheet treat MTBF as a population statistic, workload as a temperature-dependent rating, and warranty as regional support—not a field failure rate.[1]
