Is 22TB WD Red Pro storage right for your NAS?
A 22TB-per-bay capacity plan
One drive provides 22TB decimal before formatting; redundancy, snapshots and backup still consume headroom.[1][9]
Multi-bay commercial NAS
Current official pages claim RAID-optimized NAS at any / unlimited bay count. That is not a host HCL entry and does not override branded-drive policies.[1][9]
Quiet storage beside a desk
Published idle/seek is 20 / 32 dBA. Installed resonance is still enclosure-specific.[1]

Capacity, power, cooling and sound for WD221KFGX
Official column vs the product-page chip
The January 2025 table for WD221KFGX: CMR / Helium, OptiNAND Yes, 265 MB/s, 20 / 32 dBA, 6.8W / 3.4W, 0 to 65°C, 2,500,000 hours, 550 TB/year, 5-year limited warranty, origin TH. US product pages currently say unlimited / any bay count and mention NASware plus TLER. Marketing copy that mentions OptiNAND only on 22/24/26TB does not override the 20TB Yes cell.[1][9]

WD Red Pro 22TB review
Exact WD221KFGX in an 8-drive RAID6 on QNAP TVS-h1288x. Sequential large-block array throughput exceeded 2 GB/s on SMB and iSCSI; 4K writes beat the WD Gold 22TB set in the same chassis. These figures are array-plus-NAS-protocol results, not a single-disk CrystalDiskMark run.

Tested: Eight WD221KFGX drives in RAID 6 inside a QNAP TVS-h1288x, tested over SMB and iSCSI with 4K, 8K and 128K enterprise synthetic profiles. Preconditioned to steady state at16 threads and16 outstanding requests per thread; mixed workload swept2T/2Q through16T/16Q.
Applies to: Eight-drive array evidence; all throughput and IOPS are system-level, not one-drive results.

Limits to keep in mind
- Eight-drive RAID6 on a specific QNAP hides per-disk speed.
- Article specification table still shows the older 300 TB/year / 1e6-hour brief.
- One lab population, not a field failure study.
- Affiliate link present; gift/loan status unknown. Latency prose contains duplicated comparator values; no additional latency figures adopted without chart verification.

WD Red Pro 22TB HDD Review
Page 7 prose says peak read at 8 MB and peak write at 512 KB. The original Average Throughput graph (block-size sweep 1 KB–16 MB) shows the opposite pattern: blue Read peaks around 512 KB, orange Write peaks around 8 MB. Preserve the inconsistency; do not treat the prose peak-block claims as graph-confirmed. The graph is a block-size sweep, not a full-disk LBA/inner-track or elapsed-time slowdown. Final plotted points at 16 MB are read 205.06 MB/s and write 252.94 MB/s.

WD221KFGX questions before buying
Is WD221KFGX the same as every WD Red Pro 22TB?
No. This page is only WD221KFGX. Other capacities and retired suffixes are separate products.[1][9]
Will one WD221KFGX deliver 265 MB/s?
265 MB/s is the official internal transfer rating for this column (footnote: up to stated read speed; host, capacity and workload change results). NAS copies are usually limited by RAID, clients and Ethernet.[1]
Does unlimited bays mean any NAS will accept it?
No. It is Western Digital's current family compatibility claim. Confirm the NAS vendor list, DSM/QTS policy, bay firmware and warranty rules for the exact enclosure.[1][9]
Do MTBF, 550 TB/year or five years tell me this unit will last?
No. Footnote 5–7 on the data sheet treat MTBF as a population statistic, workload as a temperature-dependent rating, and warranty as regional support—not a field failure rate.[1]
