Five bays for shared storage, with an optional 10GbE path

Diskless enclosure with 8 GB ECC memory and dual 2.5GbE. Drives, 10GbE module and expansion shelves are separate.

Based on Synology documentation last updated 6 Aug 2026, original reviews, and dated US merchant listings. Official CPU is AMD Ryzen V1500B; some Newegg URLs still say R1600. We have not tested this NAS ourselves. See the review evidence ↓

Files and backups

Five bays and DSM tools suit centralized storage.[1]

A useful fit

Large transfers

Original tests show the benefit of the optional network module with suitable storage.[4][3]

Consider 10GbE

Future capacity

Two DX525 shelves can expand the SATA bay count to 15.[1]

Living with it

Five-bay storage, 10GbE and expansion

01

Match the network upgrade to the storage array

Dong’s five-HDD SHR array reached 375.2/402.2 MB/s read/write over 10GbE, versus289.3/271.1 MB/s on 2.5GbE. The SATA SSD RAID 0 result exceeded1 GB/s reading; it does not predict HDD-array speed.[3]

02

Choose the array and backup before setup

CGMagazine found physical setup straightforward but storage layouts more demanding. Choose redundancy and backups before loading important data.[5]

03

Estimate power with the intended drives installed

Dong reported around 735 Wh over 24 hours with all bays occupied; the workload was not fully specified. NASCompares measured 41–42 W idle with five HDDs. These are different measurements.[3][4]

04

Price memory, NVMe and expansion shelves together

Memory, compatible SSDs and external shelves are optional. A larger advertised volume limit depends on upgraded RAM.[1]

HDD and SSD arrays show different gains from 10GbE

Five HAT3300 HDDs in SHR reached 375.2/402.2 MB/s read/write on 10GbE. SATA SSD RAID 0 reached 1035/939.9 MB/s. The optional network module, drives and array layout are essential conditions; expansion shelves were not tested.

Synology DS1525+ Review: A Solid and Pricey Multi-Gig NAS Server

Updated Jul 15, 2025

Tested: Five 4 TB HAT3300 HDDs in SHR, separate pairs of 480 GB SAT5221 SATA SSDs or 400 GB SNV3410 NVMe SSDs in RAID 0/RAID 1; 2.5GbE or optional E10G22-T1-Mini 10GbE; factory 8 GB described. One week of use; DSM build/client unspecified.

Applies to: Hands-on storage and optional 10GbE experience.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Affiliate links present; sample-provision terms not located.
  • Expansion units were explicitly never tested; the expansion-speed concern is an inference.
  • Do not treat all nine listed test drives as simultaneously installed in the five SATA bays.

Recorded frames need their capture and array caveats

The frames show 8 GB, DSM 7.2.2 and an optional 10GbE module, with HDD RAID 5 and a separate NVMe RAID 0 pool. They contradict several prose claims and warn that capture hardware reduces reads. Treat the results as those recorded workloads.

Tested: Screenshot: DS1525+, 8 GB, DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update3, E10G22-T1-Mini. HDD benchmark is labeled RAID 5, unlike the prose SHR claim; a separate NVMe RAID 0 pool was tested. Exact HDD model is not independently established by the frames.

Applies to: Optional-10GbE HDD transfers and populated power.

  • The article and embedded frames disagree on array type and several results. The recorded 10GbE tests also warn that the capture card depresses read speeds.Source location: Speed, Noise and Power frames

Limits to keep in mind

  • Affiliate links; sample-provision terms not located.
  • VM and camera ceilings are insufficiently documented as independent tests and are not adopted as measurements.
  • Noise readings omit microphone distance; no cross-product acoustic comparison adopted.
  • The predecessor R1600 integrated-graphics claim is erroneous and is not used; drive-policy criticism predates DSM 7.3.

  • HAT5300 and 4 TB drive descriptions are inconsistent; no precise drive MPN is adopted.

Easy drive fitting, more demanding storage choices

CGMagazine found drive installation and discovery straightforward as a first-time NAS user. Choosing the storage layout needed more attention. The review describes a nonredundant setup without exact drives or numeric transfer tests.

Before you buy

DS1525+ prices and ownership costs

Buy drives and a backup destination

The enclosure contains no storage drives. RAID redundancy does not replace a separate backup.[1]

Budget for the complete faster network

The optional E10G22-T1-Mini, suitable client and network equipment are additional purchases.[1]

Plan memory and expansion together

Volumes above 108 TB require at least 32 GB RAM. Two optional DX525 units add drive bays, not included capacity.[1]

Account for licenses and subscriptions

Extra camera licenses, MailPlus accounts, C2 services and eligible extended warranty cost extra.[1]

Match published workload figures to the installed memory

The full specifications retain manufacturer test conditions. Some application limits use maximum supported RAM or SSD volumes; extra RAM, SSDs and licenses can add to the enclosure cost.[9]

Compare stores for this exact model

Diskless enclosure with 8 GB ECC memory and dual 2.5GbE. Drives, 10GbE module and expansion shelves are separate. Check the total delivered price at the store.

Questions before buying

Does the price include 10GbE?

No. Two 2.5GbE ports are included. The compatible E10G22-T1-Mini module is a separate purchase.[1]

How many drives fit?

Five SATA drives and two compatible M.2 SSDs internally. Two optional DX525 units can increase SATA bay count to 15.[1]

Can I use the older DX517?

The specified expansion unit is DX525, using the dedicated USB Type-C expansion connections. Do not substitute a DX517.[1]

Is 200 TB a factory-memory volume limit?

No. Volumes above 108 TB require at least 32 GB RAM and a suitable storage configuration.[1]

Are third-party drives allowed?

DSM 7.3 broadened SATA HDD support. M.2 pools and cache remain compatibility-listed; verify the exact drive before purchase.[2]
