Choose four bays for capacity rather than faster single-link copies
Four drive positions enable larger or more redundant arrays, while a normal connection still runs through a Gigabit port.[1]

DS423: specifications and dated store comparison →More SATA capacity for a modest home storage workload
Diskless DS423 with 2GB fixed RAM; this is the non-Plus model.
This page combines Synology’s current DS423 hardware/DSM tables with ComputerBase’s 2023 four-drive RAID 5 test. ChooseCompute has not tested the enclosure. Gigabit copies, fixed 2 GB RAM, and no M.2 or expansion unit are the buying limits — not a missing 2.5GbE Plus SKU. See the review evidence ↓

Multiple RAID layouts let you balance capacity and fault tolerance.[1]
Several light users
Two network links support configured multi-client traffic.[1]
Heavy applications
Memory is fixed and there is no M.2 or network-card slot.[1]
Frequent drive changes
The case opens from the rear and drives use screws.[2]
Key NAS specifications

Living with it
Four-bay capacity and Gigabit limits
Keep RAID, snapshots and backups separate
RAID keeps storage available through certain drive failures. Backups protect another copy, while snapshots provide earlier file states on existing storage.[1]
Leave room to open the rear case for drive service
The rear-opening case is worth considering before putting the NAS on a tightly fitted shelf.[2]
Read the conditions behind DSM user guidelines
The current five-user Drive/Office guidance reflects specific vendor test conditions, not every package running at once.[1]

Synology DS423 NAS im Test: Übertragungsraten und USB-Backup
On Gigabit Ethernet, a 5.9 GB single-file CIFS write reached 113.94 MB/s — a link-limited result, not a CPU-limited one. A 15 GB folder of ~4,000 files was a few MB/s slower than contemporary x86 Synology DSM 7.2 units.

Synology DS423 NAS im Test: Übertragungsraten und USB-Backup
Tested: Four Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB HDDs in RAID 5; fixed 2GB; DSM 7.2-64570 Update 3. Single 1GbE for ordinary copies; separate multi-client link aggregation test.
Applies to: Exact-model network and encrypted-folder benchmarks.
- On Gigabit Ethernet, a 5.9 GB single-file CIFS write reached 113.94 MB/s — a link-limited result, not a CPU-limited one. - Encrypted shared-folder copies reached 86.69 MB/s write and 89.87 MB/s read for the 15 GB folder. - Multi-client link aggregation reached 220.25 MB/s write and 221.76 MB/s read. The power chart records 34.7 W idle, 37.9 W file writing and 4.9 W HDD hibernation; the adjacent prose instead says 37.3 W load.Source location: Seite 2 Link Aggregation; Seite 3 Leistungsaufnahme

Before you buy
DS423 prices and ownership costs
Budget drives and a separate copy
The enclosure is empty. Redundancy consumes capacity and is not a substitute for backup.[1]
Leave room behind the enclosure
Drive installation uses rear case access and screws, so allow service space.[2]
Check optional fees
More than two surveillance cameras require additional licenses; optional cloud backup and extended warranty can cost extra.[1]
Match published workload figures to the installed memory
The full specifications retain manufacturer test conditions. Some application limits use maximum supported RAM or SSD volumes; extra RAM, SSDs and licenses can add to the enclosure cost.[6]

Questions before buying
Is this the DS423+?
No. This is the Realtek ARM DS423 with fixed 2GB RAM, four SATA bays and no M.2 slots.[1]
Can I add 10GbE or more memory?
No supported network expansion slot or memory upgrade is provided.[1]
Will link aggregation double a file copy?
Do not assume so. It is useful for appropriately configured multiple-client traffic and failover; each built-in link is Gigabit.[1]
Can four disks hold four times one disk’s capacity?
Only nonredundant layouts approach that raw sum. RAID 5 typically uses one drive worth of parity and RAID 6 two, before filesystem overhead; choose redundancy and backup before capacity.[1]
