An affordable two-bay backup server with one 2.5GbE link

Diskless F2-425; factory 4GB DDR4; not F2-425 Plus.

The F2-425 offers a useful starting point for home backups and light media services: two SATA bays, replaceable 4 GB RAM and one 2.5GbE port. Wired SSD tests approached the link limit, while app setup sometimes needed attention. Confirm the CPU before ordering: the current store title says N95, but its detailed specification and the tested units identify N5095. See the review evidence ↓

Is the F2-425 right for you?

Home backup

Hardware Busters measured roughly 270 / 250 MB/s large-file read/write using two SATA SSDs. TechRadar’s 60 / 50 MB/s result used a different Wi-Fi path, so it does not measure the wired port limit.[2][4]

Useful basic platform

Light apps

A mirror or two-drive TRAID trades capacity for drive-failure redundancy. There are no M.2 slots or second network port; optional USB DAS expansion needs a supported configuration and is not an independent backup.[1][9]

Expandable memory

Growing drive count

PCWorld and Impulse Gamer reported file-manager or Plex responsiveness friction. Under tested TOS 6 software, HDMI displayed a system console; current direct-TV marketing does not establish a supported media-player app.[3][10][2]

Limited internally

Direct TV playback

Current marketing conflicts with original console-only tests.[1][3][2]

01

Useful speed without a large enclosure

Hardware Busters measured roughly 270 / 250 MB/s large-file read/write using two SATA SSDs. TechRadar’s 60 / 50 MB/s result used a different Wi-Fi path, so it does not measure the wired port limit.[2][4]

02

Plan around two SATA bays

A mirror or two-drive TRAID trades capacity for drive-failure redundancy. There are no M.2 slots or second network port; optional USB DAS expansion needs a supported configuration and is not an independent backup.[1][9]

03

Allow time to configure apps

PCWorld and Impulse Gamer reported file-manager or Plex responsiveness friction. Under tested TOS 6 software, HDMI displayed a system console; current direct-TV marketing does not establish a supported media-player app.[3][10][2]

TerraMaster F2-425 NAS Review

The two-SSD mirror approached the single 2.5GbE limit in synthetic and large-file tests. A conflicting elapsed-time chart is excluded because its stated 24.78 GB / 50–57 seconds would exceed that link.

TerraMaster F2-425 NAS Review

Tested: Two ADATA SU800 240GB SATA SSDs; RAID 1 EXT4 for network tests; TOS 6.0.783–01200; 2.5GbE. Factory 4GB described; no RAM upgrade stated. Client has a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive; model and CPU unspecified.

Applies to: Useful disclosed SSD test; HDD noise and speed differ.

  • The two-SSD mirror approached the single 2.5GbE limit in synthetic and large-file tests. A conflicting elapsed-time chart is excluded because its stated 24.78 GB / 50–57 seconds would exceed that link.Source location: Pages 5–6 and original transfer charts
  • The 80 mm fan was measured at 1 m in a quiet chamber. Low-speed operation was quiet with SSDs; this does not predict HDD chatter. The HDMI output showed system information only.Source location: Pages 6–7

Limits to keep in mind

  • Client hardware and meter models not disclosed.

Before you buy

F2-425 prices and ownership costs

Plan the whole storage budget

Add suitable drives, an independent backup and any client/switch upgrades. RAID redundancy keeps some drive failures from stopping service; it does not replace a separate copy.[1]

Read each offer’s configuration and date

Verify CPU, factory RAM, new condition, seller and selected variant before checkout. Shipping, tax and final availability can change.[6][7][8]

Resolve the CPU label before checkout

The current official-store title says N95 while the exact specification PDF and reviewed units say N5095. A matching family name alone does not resolve that conflict.[1][9]

Questions before buying

Are data drives included?

No. The listed offers are new diskless enclosures with the stated factory memory. Add compatible data drives and a separate backup target.[1]

Which software version should I expect?

The current product pages advertise TOS 7, while dated reviews and some specification text refer to earlier versions. Confirm the shipping build and required apps for the exact CPU and memory variant.[1]

Can two SATA drives provide RAID 5 or RAID 6?

No. Two SATA drives support a mirror or a two-drive TRAID layout, but not three/four-drive parity modes. The base F2-425 has no M.2 slots.[1]

Do multiple Ethernet ports guarantee faster copies to one computer?

No. Faster transfers depend on the client, workload and supported network configuration. Multi-client bonding results and network-only tests are not interchangeable with a single-computer file copy.[1]
