More room for a growing backup or media library when each drive slot matters.

One 12TB Seagate IronWolf ST12000VN0008 internal SATA hard drive. NAS enclosure sold separately.

This guide combines Seagate DS1904.23 with two original ST12000VN0008 experiences: a 2021 Japanese self-purchase (sinct9a) that shows outer/middle/inner slowdown, and 2019 iPentec CrystalDiskMark output on two PCs. Tom's Hardware and StorageReview 12TB IronWolf articles are older VN0007-class labs. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. See the review evidence ↓

Seagate IronWolf 12TB NAS hard drive

Is 12TB IronWolf storage right for your NAS?

A growing media archive

12TB provides 50% more nominal space than 8TB in one drive slot. It does not promise 50% faster access.[1]

Good for capacity per slot

Large-file backups

A self-purchased VN0008 sample showed useful sequential speeds at several disk positions; it was one PC setup.[2]

A useful fit with test limits

A quiet room or near-desk enclosure

The available noise observation included other drives and fans. It cannot establish that your unit will be quiet.[2][3]

Listen before committing

Matching an existing drive revision

The main MPN does not guarantee the complete hardware suffix or firmware shipped by a store.[4][3]

Living with it

Capacity growth, disk-position speed and startup noise

01

Is 12TB enough for your next NAS capacity upgrade?

A larger drive can postpone the need to consume another enclosure slot or replace a smaller disk. That is the clearest reason to consider 12TB for a growing library; its capacity alone does not establish an advantage for demanding applications.[1]

02

The 12TB test shows why position matters

The owner’s 2021 sample reached about 248 MB/s in an outer-partition CDM test, around 200 MB/s near the middle and over 120 MB/s near the inner end. These are observations of that VN0008 unit, not guaranteed speeds for every later shipment or your NAS.[2]

03

Make time for checking and moving your files

The owner’s SeaTools long read took about 17.5 hours. Your diagnostic run, migration or RAID rebuild may differ, but the example makes the practical point: plan the move before you urgently need the new capacity.[2]

04

Helium does not guarantee a quiet system

The owner heard a brief low-frequency startup sound, which can recur when a sleeping drive wakes. Competing fans and other HDDs limited that listening test, and the official documents use different acoustic figures. Avoid treating either as a promise of quiet operation beside your desk.[2][1][3]

05

A second exact-MPN CDM set sits above the datasheet OD rating

iPentec published CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2 output for ST12000VN0008: about 250 MB/s sequential on an HP Z4 G4 and an HPE ML30 Gen9, using a 1024 MiB test file on empty partitions. Together with sinct9a’s outer-partition and inner-partition results, these show how test conditions and disk position affect one drive’s speed. Neither is a NAS-share test; a 1 GbE network can limit large-file transfers below these sequential results.[6][2][1]

A purchased VN0008 tested at several disk positions

The owner tested a Thai-made unit dated April 24, 2021, using CDM 8.0.4 partitions at the outer, middle and inner disk regions. A long diagnostic read took about 17.5 hours. Noise impressions were made with other HDDs and two fans running, so this is not a quiet-room acoustic test.

SEAGATE IronWolf 12TB ST12000VN0008

Tested: Self-purchased Thai-made unit dated 2021-04-24; initial checks on i7-3930K, benchmarks after moving to author’s secondary PC. CDM 8.0.4 at outer, middle and inner partitions. Original images identify ST12000VN0008-2PH103, SC61 and X370 SATA 6Gb/s; secondary CPU unstated. CDM 8.0.4 x64 admin, three passes, empty I5632GiB/J5444GiB/K100GiB partitions.

Applies to: This VN0008 sample only; not VN0007 or a guarantee for later dash suffixes.

  • Startup produced a brief low-frequency sound; sleep/resume makes it recur. Other HDDs and two 120mm fans limited the noise assessment.Source location: Noise section and added sleep/resume paragraph

Limits to keep in mind

  • One self-purchased sample; Amazon affiliate links present.
  • No controlled acoustic meter test; secondary host CPU and ambient temperature unspecified. 16MiB tests are cache sensitive and do not measure sustained platter throughput.

iPentec ST12000VN0008 CDM

Two 2019 CrystalDiskMark 6 runs on named workstation/server hosts both landed near 250/248 MB/s sequential at Q32T1 with a 1024 MiB test file on empty partitions. That is faster than the 210 MB/s datasheet OD rating and still not a NAS-share result.

Seagate IronWolf ST12000VN0008 (12TB) のパフォーマンス

Tested: Self-purchased ST12000VN0008. Run 1: HP Z4 G4, Xeon W-2125, Windows 10, SATA. Run 2: HPE ML30 Gen9, Xeon E3-1240 v5, Windows Server. CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2, 1024 MiB, x5, 0% fill. Windows10 Pro build18363 on Z4 G4; second host heading says Server2019 but pasted output says Server2016 Datacenter build17763. The source OS naming conflict is unresolved; five-second test intervals.

Applies to: Exact ST12000VN0008 sequential/4K CDM on two PCs in 2019. Not a NAS Ethernet test and not VN0007.

  • Sequential results were almost the same as the author's Toshiba MN07ACA12T comparison; 4K was higher on the IronWolf, which the author attributes to platter count.Source location: コメント under measurement 1

Current and historical ST12000VN0008 listings and ownership costs

Dated Newegg-sold listing and older store rows

On 2026-09-11 Newegg’s visible primary price for ST12000VN0008 was $429.99 in stock (Newegg-sold). Older B&H and Adorama rows keep their 2026-09-08 times.[7]

Compare price per capacity and total outlay

Extra terabytes can make sense when enclosure slots are scarce, but you still pay for the whole drive. Choose 12TB because it fits your expected library, not just because a per-terabyte calculation looks attractive.[1]

Check what comes with the single drive

B&H’s product Q&A says this listing does not include a manufacturer box, manual or mounting screws. Allow for any hardware your installation needs.[4]

Verify warranty for the unit you receive

The published limited warranty is three years. Keep the invoice and check coverage using the serial number, model and purchase country; a store listing does not identify every shipped hardware suffix.[1][3][4]

IronWolf 12TB questions before buying

Why might software show about 10.91 instead of 12TB?

The label uses decimal TB. Software using binary units reports about 10.91 TiB before other overhead, so the lower number does not by itself mean capacity is missing.[1]

Can I use a VN0007 review to judge this drive?

Not as a direct test of VN0008. Match the complete model number; this page’s owner measurements apply to the specified VN0008 sample.[2][3]

Will checking or rebuilding always take 17.5 hours?

No. That was one SeaTools long-read run. Rebuilding an array and moving files involve different work, and your system may take a different amount of time.[2]

Is the 12TB drive quiet enough for a bedroom?

The available material cannot answer that reliably. The listening test had other running drives and fans, and startup was audible. Compare the sound in your intended enclosure before making quietness the reason to buy.[2]
