Is 6TB IronWolf storage right for your NAS?

A 6TB-per-bay capacity plan

One drive provides 6TB decimal before formatting; redundancy and growth allowance still reduce practical headroom.[1]

Good when the capacity math fits

Home and small-office nas storage

The documented 180TB/year transferred and family features support this intended class, within the exact host compatibility boundary.[1]

Designed for this storage class

Quiet storage beside a desk

Published acoustic labels and review observations, when available, do not predict resonance or seek noise in your enclosure.[1]

Compare the installed sound

A workload that needs proven latency or application speed

The evidence does not establish performance for every array, network, database or virtual-machine workload.[1]

Capacity, power, cooling and sound for ST6000VN001

01

What 6TB changes in a NAS plan

Its capacity is practical only if it leaves enough room for growth before the next drive replacement. Calculate formatted space, redundancy, snapshots and backup copies before deciding how many drives to buy.[1]

02

What the 190 MB/s outer diameter rating does and does not say

The rating is useful for checking the exact ST6000VN001 column. It does not guarantee a network transfer rate or random-I/O result, and it should not be copied to a neighboring MPN.[1]

03

Short synthetic tests hide the inner-disk drop

Root Nation’s empty-volume CrystalDiskMark is close to the 190 MB/s outer-diameter rating, but the completed AIDA linear-read plot falls across the platter to a 25.6 MB/s minimum (average 146.4 MB/s). That is why a short CDM pass is not a copy-planning number. Write curves were not captured. Takamana’s later CDM sample is slower still and has no host details. Neither test is a NAS array result.[4][3][1]

A later empty-volume CDM sample was slower

A 2021 Japanese blog compared five 6TB drives. The original ST6000VN001 screenshot (CDM 8.0.4, 1 GiB, empty 5589 GiB) shows SEQ1M Q8T1 176.57/172.16 MB/s. The author describes one invocation; the UI ‘5’ is the app setting, not extra averaged visits.

Five 6TB CrystalDiskMark samples including ST6000VN001

Updated Feb 11, 2022

Tested: Purchased Seagate IronWolf 6TB labeled ST6000VN001. CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 x64 Admin screenshot: UI set to 5 / 1GiB / S: 0% (0/5589GiB). Author prose says a single benchmark invocation, not extra averaged sessions; do not treat the UI '5' as independently repeated visits. Host CPU/SATA path/firmware not stated.

Applies to: Exact MPN sequential CDM snapshot only. Not a NAS RAID, network, or acoustic test.

  • Among five 6TB drives from three brands on the same page, this IronWolf sample was the slowest sequential CDM result.Source location: ST6000VN001 section versus WD Blue/Red, BarraCuda and Toshiba 6TB sections

  • Amazon Japan affiliate widgets present; self-purchase claimed. Gift/cash unknown.
  • Not a NAS array, inner-track map or acoustic test.

Short CDM sits near the rating; the full-disk read curve does not

Root Nation tested ST6000VN001-2BB186 (SC60) on a Ryzen 5 3600X PC in March 2020. CrystalDiskMark 7 (1 GiB ×3, empty volume) reached about 187.7/184.1 MB/s sequential. The completed AIDA 32 KB linear read across the whole disk averaged 146.4 MB/s and dipped to 25.6 MB/s. Write graphs failed. AS SSD latency was still aborting and is not used. The YouTube companion is the same test, not a second lab.

Seagate IronWolf ST6000VN001 review (Root Nation)

Tested: Home PC: Ryzen 5 3600X, MSI X470 Gaming Plus; article lists two RAM kits without saying which ran the test. Windows 10 Pro build 17763 x64. ST6000VN001-2BB186 firmware SC60 on AS SSD and AIDA. Volume E: 5589.01 GB NTFS, nearly empty. CDM 7.0.0 x64, 1 GiB ×3, 5 s interval, Default profile, 2020-03-14 07:08:32. Companion YouTube U1OT__LPxyU (2020-04-29) is the same original test group; no ASR/frames were obtained.

Applies to: Exact MPN including unique -2BB186. Short CDM/ATTO/AS SSD sequential numbers are not a substitute for the completed AIDA linear-read curve. Do not copy to ST6000VN006.

  • Short CrystalDiskMark sequential results sit near 187/184 MB/s, close to the 190 MB/s rating, but the completed AIDA 32 KB linear read across 0–100% averages 146.4 MB/s and falls to a 25.6 MB/s minimum.Source location: 2020-03-14-1.png versus 2020-03-15-1.png
  • The author could not obtain write graphs because of an error; do not infer a matching write sweep.Source location: Testing section: «Графики записи я получить не смог из-за ошибки»
  • AS SSD access time was still running (Abort/progress) with 0.000 ms write; that latency is excluded.Source location: 2020-03-14-4.png Acc.time row

ST6000VN001 questions before buying

Is ST6000VN001 the same as every Seagate IronWolf 6TB drive?

No. This research applies only to ST6000VN001. Match the entire suffix because specifications and revisions can differ within one capacity.[1]

Will one ST6000VN001 deliver 190 MB/s outer diameter?

190 MB/s outer diameter is the official rated value and its exact label matters. Actual transfers depend on file size, drive position, host, network, RAID and software.[1]

Does the warranty or MTBF tell me how long this unit will last?

No. Warranty is support coverage and MTBF/MTTF is a population statistic under stated conditions. Keep an independent backup and monitor the installed drive.[1]

Is ST6000VN001 the fast 7200 rpm 6TB IronWolf?

No. Official DS1904.21 lists ST6000VN001 at 5400 rpm and 190 MB/s. The 7200 rpm / 210 MB/s 6TB IronWolf is a different MPN (ST6000VN0033). ST6000VN006 is another 5400 rpm 6TB with a 202 MB/s rating.[1]
