IronWolf 6TB: specifications and dated store comparison →

6TB decimal for home and small-office NAS storage, with the exact ST6000VN006 revision kept separate.

One Seagate IronWolf 6TB ST6000VN006 internal SATA hard drive. NAS enclosure and other drives sold separately.

This guide checks the exact ST6000VN006 column in Seagate DS1904.23 (5400 rpm, 202 MB/s), product manual 100807039U (512e, humidity, altitude, 4.0/5.3 W), owner TrueNAS posts that name ST6000VN006-2ZM186/SC60, 1 current US new listing dated 2026-09-11 with a separate 10-unit discount promotion, and 3 older listings. No professional exact-MPN sequential lab was adopted. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. See evidence and test gaps ↓

Seagate IronWolf 6TB NAS hard drive

Is 6TB IronWolf storage right for your NAS?

A 6TB-per-bay capacity plan

One drive provides 6TB decimal before formatting; redundancy and growth allowance still reduce practical headroom.[1]

Good when the capacity math fits

Home and small-office nas storage

The documented 180TB/year transferred and family features support this intended class, within the exact host compatibility boundary.[1]

Designed for this storage class

Quiet storage beside a desk

Published acoustic labels and review observations, when available, do not predict resonance or seek noise in your enclosure.[1]

Compare the installed sound

A workload that needs proven latency or application speed

The evidence does not establish performance for every array, network, database or virtual-machine workload.[1]

Capacity, power, cooling and sound for ST6000VN006

01

What 6TB changes in a NAS plan

Its capacity is practical only if it leaves enough room for growth before the next drive replacement. Calculate formatted space, redundancy, snapshots and backup copies before deciding how many drives to buy.[1]

02

What the 202 MB/s outer diameter rating does and does not say

The rating is useful for checking the exact ST6000VN006 column. It does not guarantee a network transfer rate or random-I/O result, and it should not be copied to a neighboring MPN.[1]

03

How much confidence the available testing adds

No professional ST6000VN006 sequential lab was found. Two TrueNAS threads name ST6000VN006-2ZM186: one posts a 1 GiB dd write of 44.9 MB/s on a six-drive pool, and one posts smartctl showing SC60, 5400 rpm and 512e. Those are original owner records, not a 202 MB/s confirmation. Nero Score lists the same unique suffix with undisclosed-n averages and is not adopted as a test. A 2023 video still only supports label/SMART identity; its 180/222 MB/s overlay has no method. ChooseCompute has not tested this drive.[8][9][10][6]

04

What the product manual adds beyond the datasheet

100807039U (March 2023) names ST6000VN006. Its 8TB & 6TB power table matches DS1904.23 at 5.3 W operating / 4.0 W idle under 25°C conditions. It also documents 512e, humidity, altitude, startup time and vibration limits. The manual specifies A-weighted sound power; the datasheet dBA pair does not establish room noise. Regulatory model SKR007 is shared with ST8000VN002; ST6000VN001 is a different regulatory model.[7][1]

05

Read the complete SMART and warranty follow-up

The owner’s April 16 smartctl 7.2 record on FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p9 identifies ST6000VN006-2ZM186 / SC60, 5400 rpm and 512/4096-byte sectors. Although the overall result says PASSED, Reallocated_Sector_Ct is 106 at 2,298 power-on hours. On April 21 the owner noticed that value and reported a warranty claim and planned replacement. The cause of the CAM timeouts remains unresolved; neither a healthy-drive conclusion nor a model-wide failure rate follows from this case.[9]

What still needs a real-world test

We have verified the specifications, but have not found an original test that we can reliably apply to this exact model. The advice above follows the documented features; performance, noise and long-term reliability are not independently established here.

Current and historical ST6000VN006 listings and ownership costs

One opened current listing at $440

Hard Disk Direct showed $440 new in stock on 2026-09-11 with Add to Cart. A 10% off line is tied to a 10-unit promo MOQ, not proven as a 10-unit base minimum. Amazon/MemoryC/Newegg were blocked. Older observations stay historical.[5][2]

Historical listings remain separate

The 3 retained historical listings keep their original August or early-September 2026 dates and are not overwritten by the 2026-09-10 observations.[2][3]

Compare the delivered unit and seller

Check ST6000VN006, new condition, seller, regional warranty channel, shipping and return terms. A marketplace product page does not by itself identify the current seller.[2][3]

Budget for the storage layout

A mirrored or parity-protected layout may require multiple drives, while a separate backup needs additional storage. Compare total delivered cost for the complete plan.[1]

ST6000VN006 questions before buying

Is ST6000VN006 the same as every Seagate IronWolf 6TB drive?

No. This research applies only to ST6000VN006. Match the entire suffix because specifications and revisions can differ within one capacity.[1]

Will one ST6000VN006 deliver 202 MB/s outer diameter?

202 MB/s outer diameter is the official rated value and its exact label matters. Actual transfers depend on file size, drive position, host, network, RAID and software.[1]

Does the warranty or MTBF tell me how long this unit will last?

No. Warranty is support coverage and MTBF/MTTF is a population statistic under stated conditions. Keep an independent backup and monitor the installed drive.[1]

Does ST6000VN006 spin at 7200 rpm?

No. DS1904.23 lists ST6000VN006 at 5400 rpm and 202 MB/s. Some store titles still say 7200 rpm; treat those as listing errors unless the order code is a different MPN such as an IronWolf Pro NT part.[1]

Is ST6000VN006 512e?

Yes on the evidence adopted here. Product manual 100807039U lists 4K physical sectors emulated at 512 bytes for ST6000VN006, and an owner smartctl dump on ST6000VN006-2ZM186 SC60 reports 512/4096. DS1904.23 does not print a sector row.[7][9]

Someone measured about 45 MB/s on TrueNAS. Is the drive that slow?

That figure is a six-drive pool dd with oflag=direct, not a single-drive outer-diameter test. Cached reads in the same thread were multi-GB/s. Use it as a configuration warning, not as the 202 MB/s rating.[8][1]
