Western Digital WD Red Pro 20TB NAS hard drive

Is 20TB WD Red Pro storage right for your NAS?

A 20TB-per-bay capacity plan

One drive provides 20TB decimal before formatting; redundancy, snapshots and backup still consume headroom.[1][6]

Good when the capacity math fits

Multi-bay commercial NAS

Current official pages claim RAID-optimized NAS at any / unlimited bay count. That is not a host HCL entry and does not override branded-drive policies.[1][6]

Vendor-intended class, host list still required

Quiet storage beside a desk

Published idle/seek is 20 / 32 dBA. Installed resonance is still enclosure-specific.[1]

Installed noise depends on the enclosure

A workload that needs proven application latency

No exact-MPN original performance test was adopted. Related same-capacity reviews are identified below and are not copied as this SKU's speed.[1][6]

No exact-MPN lab card

Capacity, power, cooling and sound for WD202KFGX

01

What 20TB changes in a NAS plan

A 20TB member reduces bay count for a given pool size and lengthens rebuild/restore. Count formatted TiB, parity, snapshots and a separate backup before ordering a set.[1][6]

02

Official column vs the product-page chip

The January 2025 table for WD202KFGX: CMR / Helium, OptiNAND Yes, 285 MB/s, 20 / 32 dBA, 6.1W / 3.6W, 0 to 65°C, 2,500,000 hours, 550 TB/year, 5-year limited warranty, origin TH. US product pages currently say unlimited / any bay count and mention NASware plus TLER. Marketing copy that mentions OptiNAND only on 22/24/26TB does not override the 20TB Yes cell.[1][6]

03

Why there is no exact-MPN speed card

ChooseCompute has not tested this drive. The recorded searches found original tests of a different same-capacity model; those results are kept separate below. Do not copy numbers from WD201KFGX: Same-capacity SKU WD201KFGX: 268 MB/s, 6.9W read/write, 1.6W standby, operating shock 30G R/W. Tom's Hardware tested WD201KFGX, not WD202KFGX.[1][6]

04

What related-model reviews can tell you

Tom's Hardware 20TB Red Pro review prints WD201KFGX: OptiNAND with 64 GB SanDisk-labelled iNAND and 512 MB DDR4, NASware 3.0 on the label. Sustained rating in that article 272 MB/s and 6.9 W average — the January 2025 WD202KFGX column is 285 MB/s / 6.1 W. The original performance page reports weak 3DMark/PCMark10 trace results but competitive sequential transfers and a relative 4KB advantage. Its rig used an i9-12900K, 32GB DDR5 and Windows11 Pro; DiskBench copied31,227 files totaling50GB, then read a6.5GB ZIP. These are related WD201 findings; graph-only numeric results were not transcribed, and they do not establish WD202 performance.[1][6][7]

What still needs a real-world test

We have verified the specifications, but have not found an original test that we can reliably apply to this exact model. The advice above follows the documented features; performance, noise and long-term reliability are not independently established here.

WD202KFGX questions before buying

Is WD202KFGX the same as every WD Red Pro 20TB?

No. This page is only WD202KFGX. The January 2025 table also lists WD201KFGX at the same capacity with different ratings.[1][6]

Will one WD202KFGX deliver 285 MB/s?

285 MB/s is the official internal transfer rating for this column (footnote: up to stated read speed; host, capacity and workload change results). NAS copies are usually limited by RAID, clients and Ethernet.[1]

Does unlimited bays mean any NAS will accept it?

No. It is Western Digital's current family compatibility claim. Confirm the NAS vendor list, DSM/QTS policy, bay firmware and warranty rules for the exact enclosure.[1][6]

Do MTBF, 550 TB/year or five years tell me this unit will last?

No. Footnote 5–7 on the data sheet treat MTBF as a population statistic, workload as a temperature-dependent rating, and warranty as regional support—not a field failure rate.[1]
